Skip Rachel Homan and her Ottawa-based foursome are one win away from a Canadian women’s national curling championship. Homan, who has won 10 straight games in Calgary this week, defeated Manitoba veteran Jennifer Jones 6-4 in 11 ends on Saturday night. Homan plays the winner of Sunday’s all-Manitoba semifinal between Jones and Kate Cameron in Sunday night’s final.

NHL

  • Noah Hanifin scored twice, Jonathan Huberdeau and Connor Zary each chipped in with two assists and the Calgary Flames scorched the visiting Edmonton Oilers 6-3 on Saturday night. Nazem Kadri, Martin Pospisil, Dryden Hunt and Blake Coleman also scored for the Flames, who won their third straight. Zach Hyman scored twice and Mattias Janmark added a single for the Oilers, who dropped their third NHL game in a row.
  • Birthday boy Tyler Bertuzzi’s third goal of the game, a power-play marker at 17:09 of the third period, snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. Mitchell Marner scored the other goal for the Leafs, who won their seventh straight NHL game. Artturi Lehkonen, Mikko Rantanen, and Andrew Cogliano scored for the Avalanche.
  • Brock Boeser’s second goal of the game, scored at 1:32 of overtime, lifted the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Boston Bruins on Saturday in a battle of the NHL’s top two teams. Filip Hronek also scored and J-T-Miller had three assists for the Canucks, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Jesper Boqvist and Danton Heinen scored for the Bruins.
  • The Ottawa Senators spotted the visiting Vegas Golden Knights a 2-0 lead tonight then stormed back with three unanswered goals, but had to settle for a 4-3 shootout victory when Chandler Stephenson’s second goal of the game with 75 seconds left in regulation tied it 3-3 for the visitors. Thomas Chabot, Drake Batherson and Josh Norris scored for the Sens, while Jonathan Marchessault added a single for the Golden Knights, who have lost three NHL games in a row.
  • Gustav Forsling scored at 3:41 of overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Washington Capitals. The Caps led 2-1 in the third period when Carter Verhaeghe scored at 16:30 to tie the game. Nick Cousins also scored for the Panthers. Sonny Milano and Tom Wilson scored for the Capitals.


WHL

Kennewick, Wash. – The Regina Pats dropped the second game of their U.S. road trip, falling 5-3 to the Tri-City Americans on Saturday at the Toyota Center.

The Pats got contributions from throughout the lineup on Saturday, with nine different players getting on the scoresheet. The Pats got goals from Tye Spencer, Brayden Barnett and Sam Oremba with a goal in each period. Spencer scored for a third straight game, Barnett scored in his 100th career game, and Oremba reached 20 goals.

Kelton Pyne made 28 saves in the loss. The power play was able to score for a eighth straight game, going 1-4. The penalty kill was a perfect 3-3.

RED DEER, Alta. — Kenta Isogai scored the game-winning goal at 3:20 of the third period as the visiting Wenatchee Wild edged the Red Deer Rebels 3-2.

LANGLEY, B.C. — Cameron Schmidt scored three times and Kyren Gronick chipped in with three assists as the Vancouver Giants blitzed the visiting Kamloops Blazers 7-1.

KELOWNA, B.C. — Ondrej Becher scored the lone goal of a three-round shootout as the visiting Prince George Cougars edged the Kelowna Rockets 6-5.

SEATTLE, Wash. — Julius Miettinen had a goal and assist as the visiting Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1.

BRONCOS 4, TIGERS 3 (OT)

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Connor Hvidston scored 73 seconds into overtime as the visiting Swift Current Broncos clipped the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-3. Conor Geekie, Mathew Ward and Luke Mistelbacher also scored for the Broncos (32-19-4-2), who outshot the Tigers 37-32.

WINTERHAWKS 5, ROYALS 2

VICTORIA, B.C. — Tyson Jugnauth scored a goal and added an assist as the visiting Portland Winterhawks defeated the Victoria Royals 5-2.

 

 

WORLD JUNIORS

EDMONTON – The world junior hockey championship is returning to Alberta.

Hockey Canada says the province will host the world juniors in 2027. No cities or venues for the tournament have been set.

Alberta last hosted the world juniors in 2022 in Edmonton. Ottawa will host the event next year while the 2026 tournament will take place in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minn.

Hockey Canada also announced that Alberta will host this year’s world para hockey championship at WinSport Arena in Calgary from May 4-12 and the Hlinka Gretzky Cup at Rogers Place in Edmonton from Aug. 5-10.

Alberta will host the Hlinka Gretzky Cup again in 2026 and some Canada-U. S. women’s rivalry series games in 2025 and 2026.

“Hosting international games and tournaments are critical to provide opportunities for our men’s, women’s and para athletes to develop and compete on the world stage, showcase our teams and communities, and inspire the next generation of participants and fans,” Hockey Canada president and chief executive officer Katherine Henderson said in a statement.

The announcement included an $11-million commitment from the Alberta government to host the events throughout the province.

MLS

CF Montreal opened its Major League Soccer regular season on Saturday, playing to a scoreless draw with Orlando SC at Inter-and-Company Stadium. Montreal had five shots on target compared to Orland City’s four, but the hosts dominated ball possession with 60 per cent and had nine corners compared to the visitors’ one. Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois recorded his 12th career clean sheet.
