The Grey Cup game has finally arrived. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are set to clash with the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL title game tonight. Winnipeg, which finished 15-and-3 in the regular season, will look to claim its third consecutive Grey Cup title. Meanwhile, the East Division champion Argos aim to get their first taste of glory since winning the championship in 2017.

 

 

USPORTS

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies and Laval Rouge et Or will play for the 57th Vanier Cup.

The Huskies pulled away in the second half on Saturday to beat St. Francis Xavier 36-19 in the Uteck Bowl in Antigonish, N.S.

Laval beat the Western Mustangs 27-20 to win the Mitchell Bowl.

The Canadian university football championship is next Saturday in London, Ont.

Saturday’s Uteck Bowl was tied 6-6 at halftime before the Huskies pulled away in the fourth quarter after touchdowns from Daniel Wiebe and John Stoll.

Wiebe’s touchdown was a 41-yard reception, while Stoll picked off a pass from X-Men quarterback Silas Fagnan and returned it for a touchdown.

Laval will be gunning for a record 11th Vanier Cup title.

WHL ROUND-UP

SEATTLE – Gracyn Sawchyn scored the game-winning goal 2:04 into overtime as the Seattle Thunderbirds edged the Everett Silvertips 2-1 on Saturday.

Kyle Crnkovic added the other for Seattle (13-3-1). Thomas Milic stopped 21-of-22 shots.

Roan Woodward scored the lone goal for Everett (12-7-1), which has now lost three straight. Braden Holt made 28 saves.

Woodward put the Silvertips on the board first 4:52 into the second period on the power play. Everett held a 1-0 lead until 8:19 of the third when Crnkovic knotted the game for the Thunderbirds with a power-play marker to send it to overtime.

WHEAT KINGS 4 REBELS 2

RED DEER, Alta. – Nate Danielson scored the winner and insurance markers as Brandon handed Red Deer its second loss in a row. The Rebels were up 2-1 before Nolan Ritchie tied up for the Wheat Kings, followed up Danielson’s clutch play.

WINTERHAWKS 3 BLAZERS 2 (OT)

PORTLAND, Ore. – Ryan McCleary scored the game-winning goal with just 15 seconds remaining in overtime period as Portland (16-1-1-1) edged Kamloops (9-4-3-1). The Winterhawks were down 2-0 before mounting a comeback and sealing it in the extra period.

ICE 5 PATS 2

WINNIPEG – Zach Benson netted two goals and added two assists as Winnipeg (20-1-0) handed Regina (9-11-1-1) its third straight loss. Conor Geekie, Connor McClennon and Ty Nash added the others for the Ice.

OIL KINGS 4 HURRICANES 2

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Carson Golder scored two key goals to lift Edmonton (4-17-1) past Lethbridge (11-9-0-1). Golder netted the game-tying goal, then the insurance marker after Marshall Finnie’s winner, to help seal it for the Oil Kings.

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. – Connor Ungar stopped all 33 shots he faced to earn a shutout as Moose Jaw (13-8-0) handily defeated Swift Current (9-11-0). The Broncos outshot the Warriors 33-29 in a losing effort.

HITMEN 6 CHIEFS 2

SPOKANE, Wash. – Grayden Siepmann and Carson Wetsch both notched one goal and two assists as Calgary (11-5-2-1) downed Spokane (4-13-0-1). Jacob Wright, Riley Fiddler-Schultz, Zac Funk and Matteo Danis added the others for the Hitmen.

COUGARS 5 ROYALS 2

VICTORIA – Cole Dubinsky recorded two goals as Prince George (12-9-0) cruised past Victoria (3-16-3). After the Royals tied it at 2-2 15:27 into the second period, the Cougars scored three unanswered to pull away late in the frame.

ROCKETS 5 AMERICANS 3

KELOWNA, B.C. – Adam Kydd and Jackson DeSouza each scored twice as Kelowna (8-8-1) came back to defeat Tri-City (8-12-0). The Rockets were down 3-1 early in the second before scoring four unanswered.

RAIDERS 5 TIGERS 4

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – Evan Herman capped a two-goal effort by scoring the eventual winner as Prince Albert (8-12-2) narrowly edged Medicine Hat (6-10-4-1). Sloan Stanick scored two of his own while Landon Kosior added the other for the Raiders

And I will say it again. Why oh why is the Vanier Cup not in some way intrinsically linked to the Grey Cup and wrapped up on the same weekend so you have a celebration of all things Canadian Football. Instead, we’ll have the Grey Cup today and next week football fans will be ensconced in the NFL and the U Sports guys will play in front of their parents in a snowstorm. All my life I heard about the Memorial Cup on hockey. Nary a mention/whisper of the Vanier and what it even is. And I can tell people… Read more »

CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie and the overall CFL conglomerate need a good swift kick in the a** immediately. Actually Ambrosie should step down and leave! More cohesive efforts to succeed a must between all team franchisees.

Milt Stegall needs to sign a player contract just before game time, dress up and win a Grey Cup with his Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Taylor Field in Regina Saskatchewan. Milt good to go!
