EDMONTON – Dean Faithfull kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired as the Edmonton Elks gave the Calgary Stampeders a taste of their own medicine, coming from behind to record a 25-23 victory on Saturday.
The Elks, who blew a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter in Monday’s Labour Day loss to Calgary, kept their faint playoff hopes alive, improving to 3-10.
The Stampeders (4-9) have lost four of their last five.
The Elks had a strong start to the contest with a touchdown on their first possession as Kevin Brown found a seam up the middle and scampered 45 yards into the end zone.
Calgary quarterback Jake Maier responded by finding Markeith Ambles for a 35-yard passing play, eventually setting up a 37-yard Rene Paredes field goal.
The Stampeders took the lead midway through the second quarter when Maier completed a short three-yard TD pass to William Langlais.
TORONTO – Chad Ouellette ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts clinched a CFL playoff spot with a 39-10 home win over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday afternoon.
Toronto (10-1) earned a fourth straight victory, but also cemented the season series with Montreal (6-6). The two teams meet Friday at Molson Stadium to complete the home-and-home series.
Ouellette cemented the win with a two-yard TD run at 2:36 of the fourth quarter, putting Toronto ahead 36-10. The Argos improved to 6-0 within the East Division and 6-0 at home (although one win came in Halifax).
Montreal has dropped three straight, but now must be concerned with the third-place Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-7).The Alouettes played most of the contest without Austin Mack – the CFL’s leading receiver with 60 catches for 971 yards and four TDs – after he was ejected in the first quarter.
Toronto earned its fifth win in seven meetings with Montreal to the delight of a BMO Field gathering of14,415. The Argos improved to 17-5 at the venue since 2021.
Argos starter Chad Kelly was 21-of-28 passing for 278 yards. He also ran twice for six yards and a TD.

George Springer homered twice and drove in four runs, Kevin Gausman struck out 10 over eight superb innings and the Toronto Blue Jays moved a season-best 16 games above .500 by beating the Kansas City Royals 5-1 today. Vladimir Guerrero Junior had two hits for the Blue Jays, who entered the game one and-a-half games ahead of the Texas Rangers for the final AL wild-card berth.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Quinn Ewers finished what he started last season, passing for 349 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 11 Texas to a 34-24 victory over third-ranked Alabama on Saturday night in a huge win for a program trying to climb back into national championship contention.
The Longhorns (2-0) delivered the biggest victory under Steve Sarkisian in a game that slipped away last season after a red-hot Ewers exited because of a first-quarter shoulder injury. He was back and with another big weapon in Adonai Mitchell.
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) – Shedeur Sanders accounted for three scores, Colorado’s defense forced four turnovers and the Buffaloes beat longtime rival Nebraska in the home debut of Deion Sanders at sold-out Folsom Field.
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) – O’Shaan Allison scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter to allow Ohio to overcome a 10-point first-half deficit and earn a 17-10 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night.
The Bobcats did not allow the Florida Atlantic offense to score. The Owls got a 37-yard field goal from Logan Lupo in the second quarter, and two minutes later Jarron Morris returned an interception 72 yards to put FAU on top 10-0 with five minutes left in the half.
Kurtis Rourke got Ohio on the board with a 13-yard pass to Will Kacmarek to make it 10-7 at intermission. The Bobcats marched 80 yards in nine plays in the third quarter to take the lead, 14-10 and Alex Kasee capped the night by converting on a 39-yard field goal with 5:26 left.
Rourke was 18 of 29 for 203 yards and a touchdown, but was picked off twice. Allison finished with 80 yards on 22 carries to lead Ohio (2-1).
Casey Thompson was 23 of 42 for 180 yards to lead Florida Atlantic (1-1) but was picked off twice. LaJohntay Wester caught 12 passes for 101 yards.

Regina Pats goaltender Ewan Huet stopped 42 of 44 in a 2-1 preseason overtime loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday at Westoba Place.
The Regina Pats held a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of action before a third period tying goal from Charlie Elick. Dominik Petr was the hero for the Wheat Kings, beating Huet with just three seconds left on the clock. Cameron Kuzma would score Regina’s only goal in the loss, as the Pats fall to 0-1-1 in pre-season action.
