WMBL: Saturday night the Regina Red Sox beat the Melville Millionaires 4-3 in a rain shortened five inning game. The win was the second in a row for Regina.
Red Sox starter Parks Smithey gave up just one hit in four innings of work before Louis Cohen came on to shut down the Millionaires in the bottom of the fifth. The win improved Smithey’s season record to 2-3.
The Red Sox, now 14-19, banged out seven hits on Melville starter Anthony Duen.
Zach Weatherford and Gabe Snyder, who both played last season with Wright State, led the Red Sox offensive attack.
Weatherford had another outstanding night at the plate, as he was three for three with a run, two RBIs and a stolen base. Snyder was two for three with an RBI. Regina born, Jager Toffan also added a hit and scored two runs.
Next up for the Red Sox is a Sunday afternoon matinee in Yorkton against the Cardinals.

MLB: Mark Buehrle earned his 10th victory of the year as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2. Buehrle pitched seven strong innings, limiting the Royals to two runs and five hits while improving to 4-and-oh with a 1-point-2-4 E-R-A in his past four starts against them. Toronto’s Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer, his 18th long ball of the season.
Meanwhile Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista will skip the All-Star game to receive treatment on the sore right shoulder he’s been playing through for several weeks. Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier will take Bautista’s spot on the American League squad.

PAN AM GAMES: Canada is off to a strong start at the Pan American Games. The Canadians lead the overall medal count after Day 1 with eight – including four gold, two silver and two bronze. The United States, Mexico and Colombia are right behind Canada with seven total medals apiece.

PGA: Jordan Spieth shot a career-best 10-under 61 to grab a two-shot lead at the John Deere Classic. Spieth _ who will try for his third straight major title next week at the British Open _ is at 17-under after the best round of the tournament since Steve Stricker shot a 60 five years ago.

WIMBLEDON: Serena Williams has won her 21st career Grand Slam title. She defeated Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the Wimbledon final in straight sets. Williams now has six Wimbledon titles. The win at the All England Club gives her a personal “Serena Slam” as she has won the last four majors over the last two years, going back to last year’s U.S. Open.

UFC: Robbie Lawler stopped Canadian Rory MacDonald early in the fifth round at UFC 189 in Las Vegas on Saturday night, defending his welterweight title in a spectacularly bloody bout.
Lawler (26-10) battered MacDonald for much of the final four rounds, leaving the Quesnel, B.C. native with a badly damaged nose. Lawler finally ended it with a big left hand directly into the face of MacDonald, who rolled onto his back in agony before Lawler finished him 60 seconds into the fifth.
Meanwhile Conor McGregor won the UFC interim featherweight title in dramatic fashion at UFC 189 on Saturday night, stopping Chad Mendes with three seconds left in the third round after a vicious series of strikes.
McGregor (18-2) spent much of the first two rounds on his back, but the Irish sensation finished the fight with a lightning-quick combination. After a huge left hand put Mendes down, McGregor pounded away for the stoppage and then jumped onto the cage in celebration.
He later sunk to his knees in tears while thousands of Irish fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena serenaded him.
Mendes (17-3), who stepped in for injured featherweight champion Jose Aldo just 2 1/2 weeks ago, embraced McGregor in sportsmanship after a promotion dominated by high-level trash talk.
