Mats Zuccarello scored twice and Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves as the New York Rangers steamrolled the Vancouver Canucks 5-1. Ryan McDonagh, J-T Miller and Marc Staal had the other goals for New York. Nick Bonino had the only goal for Vancouver. Ryan Miller made 18 stops in taking the ugly loss.

Jonathan Bernier and the Toronto Maple Leafs are rolling. Bernier made 27 saves as Toronto downed the Detroit Red Wings 4-1. Backup goalie James Reimer was supposed to get the start, but he tweaked his groin in practice. That set up Bernier’s 10th start in 11 games. The Maple Leafs have now won four straight and seven of their last 10.

Ryan Getzlaf scored the eventual winner and added an assist as the Anaheim Ducks earned their second win in Manitoba this week, beating the Winnipeg Jets 4-1. Earlier in the day, Bobby Ryan and Mika Zibanejad scored in a shootout to lift the Ottawa Senators over the Boston Bruins 3-2.

Don Cherry has a bone to pick with the Lou Marsh trophy selection committee. The hockey commentator thinks Olympic bobsled champion Kaillie Humphries should not have won the trophy as Canada’s top athlete of 2014. Instead, Cherry says the award should have gone to Los Angeles Kings defencemen Drew Doughty who led his NHL team to a Stanley Cup championship and was a key part of Canada’s Olympic gold medal winning team.

Marcus Mariota has won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first Oregon player to earn US college football’s top individual honour. A pinpoint passer with wide-receiver speed, Mariota came into his junior season as the favourite to win the Heisman and delivered a performance that turned the presentation ceremony into a foregone conclusion.

Ottawa’s Rachel Homan and Scotland’s Eve Muirhead will face each other in the Canadian Open curling championship final on Sunday. Homan advanced after a 4-3 win over Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin. Muirhead defeated Edmonton’s Val Sweeting 6-3 in that semifinal. In the men’s final, Brad Gushue will play Steve Laycock.

I have to reverse myself. Don Cherry was irrelevant for the past 15 years. When Brian Burke did the power play to have CBC lose TV rights something was accomplished. It placed a limit and boundary on Don Cherry's behavior. He has been good this year. He's been making good comments, along with strong analysis. The move to stick him with 5 minutes ensures he had better have his poop tight, and be ready to go. 7 minutes was way to long. Last night he mentioned he needs to hock the book and videos the way things are going. He'll… Read more »

Obama, what are you doing commenting on a Sunday? Normally the weekends are 'Obama-free'. I always assumed it was because you only clog up cyberspace on your employers dime.

"Obama is employed?

He’s a provincial gov’t employee, he only had to seem smart for the first year to pass probation, then he’s union protected and they couldn’t get rid of him no matter how much they wanted to (Just like us readers on Rod’s blog)

Weak management is the only reason employees within a union environment do not lose their job. If you follow the steps of progressive discipline even the union will tell you there is nothing they can do to so call protect members. This system is much better than a private sector intitution where the owner/management can make up the rules as they go and decide arbitrarly how issues will be dealt. Many years ago I worked for a sewer of an organization with a sewer for an Owner. Actually a few of the Roughriders were employed there during the off season… Read more »

Informative comment above. There are too many farmers posting misinformation and ignorance about unions. Too bad when the only retort to an opinion is derogatory political name calling.

OBAMA LOVE – a new fundraising bumper sticker for your car. Give the guy credit, he donates tons of his precious time to crafting his wonderful prose for fans of this blog to read and enjoy or get their knickers in a knot, as the case may be. At this time of year it is important to share the love with friend and foe, including that brilliant savant who goes by Obama.
