The win was the first in five games for Toronto, which got 5-and-2-thirds innings of work out of starter Mark Buehrle in his first game at U-S Cellular Field against his old squad. Brett Cecil picked up the win in relief.

Darian Durant’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Rob Bagg on the first play of the fourth quarter was the difference as the Roughriders edged the Alouettes 16-11. Durant finished the game with 221 throwing yards for Saskatchewan, which won its fourth game in a row. The Alouettes, meanwhile, have dropped five straight outings.

The Tiger-Cats have no answers for the Stampeders. Calgary defeated Hamilton 30-20 for its sixth straight win and 10th in 11 meetings with Hamilton. Bo Levi Mitchell threw for a touchdown and ran for one more for the Stampeders, who move into a tie for first in the West with Edmonton at 6-1.

Milos Raonic was ousted by Roger Federer yet again. Federer downed the Thornhill, Ontario native in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the final of the Western and Southern Open. The Swiss star left Raonic with a 0-6 record in their series and beat him for the second time this season.

The Vancouver Whitecaps earned at least one point in their sixth straight match as they battled to a nil-nil draw with Chivas USA. Also, Dominic Dwyer scored twice in the first half as Sporting Kansas City downed Toronto FC 4-1 and the Montreal Impact ended a seven-game losing streak with a 1-nil victory over the Chicago Fire.

It’s all over for Canada at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. The Canadians were blanked in the quarter-finals 2-nil by Germany in front of a home crowd of 22,421 in Edmonton. Earlier, North Korea eliminated the USA 3-1 in penalty kicks to advance with the Germans onto the semifinals.
