The Toronto Maple Leafs came up just short of a big win over one of the NHL’s top teams. Ryan Hartman scored the winner with 17 seconds left in overtime as the Chicago Blackhawks downed the Leafs 2-1. Toronto rookie Auston Matthews broke out of a seven-game goal drought, while Frederik Andersen was sharp with 37 saves.

Paul Byron and Alexander Radulov scored in the shootout as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-3 in the first half of a home-and-home series between the top two teams in the Atlantic Division. The Canadiens are now two points ahead of the Senators for first place.

Mike Aviles got four hits and drove in three runs as Puerto Rico beat Venezuela 13-2 for its sixth straight win at the World Baseball Classic. Puerto Rico, runner-up to the Dominican Republic in the 2013 WBC, will play the Netherlands to open the final round at Dodger Stadium on Monday night.

Jake Bauers hit a two-run home run as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 in spring training action in Dunedin, Florida. Mat Latos took the loss, giving up a hit and two earned runs in three-and-two-thirds innings pitched. The Blue Jays are 6-and-13 so far this spring.

A win, a loss and a draw for Canada’s Major League Soccer teams. Toronto FC beat the Whitecaps 2-0 in Vancouver on second-half goals from Victor Vazquez and Jozy Altidore. And the Montreal Impact played to a 1-1 draw against New York City F-C at Yankee Stadium. Dominic Oduro scored for Montreal.

Charley Hoffman closed with three straight birdies for a 1-under 71 that allowed him to catch Kevin Kisner for a share of the lead in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Canadian Adam Hadwin is four shots back after a 69 on Saturday. The Abbotsford, B-C product is coming off his first PGA win last weekend.
