Chris Higgins scored in the fifth round of the shootout and Roberto Luongo made 31 saves in his return from injury as the Canucks scrapped out a 3-2 win against the Flames. All 10 players on the ice dropped their gloves off the opening face-off and 188 minutes in penalties and eight game misconducts were handed out to both clubs before the first period was through.

James van Riemsdyk scored the winner as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-3. Defenceman Jacob Trouba had his second goal of the night in overtime to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. And the New York Rangers dropped the Ottawa Senators 4-1.

Tomas Tatar scored and Jimmy Howard stopped all three shots he faced in a shootout, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the L-A Kings. The Red Wings received a big break late in regulation when Detroit defenceman Niklas Kronwall’s shot was deflected and bounced off the net out of play, came back and struck goalie Jonathan Quick’s back, and went in to tie the game with 26.1 seconds left.

Josh Smith and Rodney Stuckey kept the Washington Wizards from their first winning record in more than four years. Smith overcame a slow start to score 22 points and Rodney Stuckey added 20 as the Pistons beat the Wizards 104-98. The Wizards last had a winning record when they started the 2008-09 season at 2-1.

Billed as the biggest fight between two Canadians, Jean Pascal dominated an unusually tentative Lucian Bute to win the battle of former world champions by unanimous decision in a non-title bout in Montreal. Pascal was on the attack from the outset and cut Bute in the tenth round.

Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard is on the court in the Australian Open in a fourth-round match up against Australia’s Casey Dellacqua. Earlier, top-seeded Serena Williams was ousted from the tournament by Ana Ivanovic in a stunning 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 upset. Williams hadn’t lost a match since August and came into the fourth round with 25 straight wins.

Calgary was certainly instigated this start by lining up the Goon squad for the opening face off. Sure Vancouver is trying to change their image and it's been so obvious in the last 12 games or so. However this style of hockey is a real step backwards. For a league that is trying to do away with concussions and bad press. This game did nothing but hurt the NHL. Both teams are responsible for this stupid and ridiculous beginning of a what was suppose to be two Canadian teams squaring off for a Hockey game. Maybe I'm getting old and… Read more »

I haven't watched hockey all year. Chest beating and soapbox preaching like that above turned me off the sport. I watched the highlights of the brawl 4 times on my phone last night. To say it did "nothing but hurt the NHL" is a joke. Why are the attendance numbers across the CHL plummeting the last few years? Any coincidence that they are taking out the fighting and physical play perhaps?

If professional players can't get jacked up for a game, and have to drop their gloves, for motivation, the "game" is in serious trouble!! That's why amateur hockey(eg. Olympics, World Junior) is better hockey.
Cut out the crap! That's not hockey!

Agree – both coaches, and the players involved should be suspended for a couple games. Bush league.

I quite enjoyed the fight at the beginning. Call me old school, the other way. Bring on the bleeding hearts.

Brawlers and wannabe brawlers are so barbaric that they can't even see how ridiculous and ape like they actually look.

Step back monkeymen and take a look at yourself.

PISS on old time hockey. NOT kidding. It's not the 19th century. Well, it's not everywhere else but NHL arenas. Always will be a neanderthal "sport".

Hockey fights are not entertaining they are BORING.Players hitting their knuckles on plastic helmets make my eyes roll. That is not old time hockey, that is why I lost interest in hockey many years ago. Here is what I see.. player crosses red line dumps puck into corner. All other players chase after except defense men. Nobody in the slot. Puck comes out where somebody can head man the puck to center ice where that player dumps the puck into the corner..repeat repeat repeat repeat.BORING
