A Canadian gold-medal favourite for the Olympics is hurting. Mark McMorris fractured a rib while finishing second in the slopestyle event at the Winter X Games. McMorris, a Regina product, said later he still has his sights set on Russia, where slopestyle will make its Olympic debut. Fellow Canadian Max Parrot edged McMorris for gold. Another Sochi-bound Canadian, Spencer O’Brien won third in the women’s slopestyle.

Tiger Woods has failed to make the cut in his season-opening tournament, the Farmer Insurance Open. He shot a third round 79 at Torrey Pines to match his worst score on American soil. Woods missed the 54-hole cut for the first time in his career and had to rally just to break 80.

Gary Woodland is the leader after carding five birdies in a 2-under 70. Woodland is minus-8 after three rounds, one shot ahead of second-round leader Jordan Spieth and Marc Leishman.
Weyburn’s Graham DeLaet is tied for 13th at 4-under, four strokes off the lead.

The Isles thought they had won it once Thomas Vanek beat Jaroslav Halak on a power play with 1:15 left in overtime, but the play was overturned on review at the league offices in Toronto, where it was determined Vanek kicked the puck into the net.
