The Saskatchewan Roughriders begin defense of their Grey Cup title Sunday afternoon when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to close out Week 1 in the CFL (5:00 pm, TSN, CKRM Rider Radio Network).

Darian Durant will start at quarterback for the Green & White against Hamilton’s Zack Collaros who will make his Ticats debut.

The Roughriders have some catching up to do as West Division opponents Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton all won their season-openers.  The Riders are five point favourites heading into the clash.

Mike Reilly threw three touchdown passes as Edmonton beat B-C 27-20 on Saturday. Reilly threw for 229 yards against his former team. Last season Edmonton finished 4-and-14 for their worst finish in 50 years. The Lions meanwhile lost in the first round of the playoffs.

The Calgary Stampeders opened their CFL season with a bang. Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 313 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Stamps trampled the Montreal Alouettes 29-8. Troy Smith meanwhile had a tough debut as the Als’ quarterback. He was sacked four times and intercepted once.

Brazil and Colombia will meet in the World Cup quarter-finals. Both teams advanced with a pair of victories in the Round of 16. Brazil needed penalty kicks to survive a 3-2 win against Chile. Colombia meanwhile cruised to a 2-nil victory over Uruguay, which was without banned striker Luis Suarez.

It was a hard luck day in Toronto for Blue Jays rookie starter Marcus Stroman. He took a one-hitter into the seventh inning only to watch Dustin McGowan give up a three-run homer on his first pitch in relief against Chicago. The White Sox went on to win 4-3.

Mike Napoli hit a home run off Masahiro Tanaka in the ninth inning as the Boston Red Sox edged the New York Yankees 2-1. Oakland needed 14 innings to get by Miami 7-4, Detroit held off Houston 4-3, Milwaukee romped past Colorado 7-4 and Tampa Bay beat Baltimore 5-4.

Canada’s best tennis players are still alive at Wimbledon. Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic each reached the fourth round. The same can’t be said for Serena Williams. The top-ranked women’s player was upset by 25th-seeded Alize Cornet of France.

I sure hope Peter King brought all his rain gear and that the Riders are the better swimmers today! A tough day ahead for old Gainer too.
