The Maple Leafs have won the draft lottery and will pick first overall this summer. It’s the first time in 31 years that Toronto has the Number 1 selection. In 1985 the Leafs selected Wendel Clark first. Finishing the 2015-16 regular season with the NHL’s worst record, the Leafs had the best odds of winning the lottery. Winnipeg at two and Columbus at three round out the top three picks.

Game 2 goes to Pittsburgh. Eric Fehr scored the winner at 15:32 of the third period as the Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 2-1. That series is now 1-1, with Game 3 Monday in Pittsburgh. Earlier, Tampa Bay beat the Islanders 4-1 to even their series at a game each. Game 3 goes Tuesday in Brooklyn.

CJHL

Day 1 of the Western Canada Cup regional Junior A tournament in Estevan is in the books.  In a five-team tournament which will decide Western Canada’s two berths in the Royal Bank Cup, Saturday featured a doubleheader.

The MJHL-champion Portage Terriers downed the SJHL-champion Melfort Mustangs 2-1 in the early game at Affinity Place.  In the nightcap, the BCHL-champion West Kelowna Warriors shutout the host Estevan Bruins 3-0.

There’s another pair of games on tap on Sunday in Estevan.  At 2:00 pm the AJHL-champion Brooks Bandits face West Kelowna.  In the evening game at 7:00, the Estevan Bruins take on the Portage Terriers.

NLL

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Zack Greer scored five goals to lead the Saskatchewan Rush over the Rochester Knighthawks 13-9 on Saturday night in National Lacrosse League action.

Ben McIntosh added a pair of goals for the Rush (13-5). Brett Mydske, Curtis Knight, Jarrett Davis, Ryan Dilks, Dan Taylor and Mark Matthews rounded out the attack.

Joe Resetarits, Stephen Keogh and Cody Jamieson all struck twice for Rochester (6-11). Dan Dawson, Brad Self and Josh Gillam had the others.

Aaron Bold stopped 35 shots for the win in net. Matt Vinc kicked out 34-of-46 shots in defeat. Backup Angus Goodleaf played 1:59 of relief and allowed the lone shot he faced to get past him.

Saskatchewan was 3 for 6 on the power play, with the Knighthawks converting on both of their opportunities with the man advantage.

MLB

J.A. Happ pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out seven, only to settle for a no decision after Tampa Bay beat Toronto 4-3 thanks to a walk-off single from Curt Casali in the ninth inning. Jose Bautista’s two-run home run off Chris Archer gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead in the third before the Rays rallied.

Rougned Odor matched a Rangers record with three doubles, Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer and Texas benefited from another replay challenge in a 7-2 victory over the Angels. Odor’s second double was part of the Rangers’ six-run third inning. The play was initially ruled a foul ball, but the replay showed the ball kicked up a small bit of chalk and Odor was awarded a double.

NBA

LaMarcus Aldridge had 38 points and the Spurs dismantled the Oklahoma City Thunder 124-92. San Antonio never trailed in Game 1 of the second-round NBA series. The Spurs led by as many as 43 points and sat their starters in the fourth quarter to rest them for Game 2 on Monday night.
