REGINA – A charge of aggravated assault against former Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Taj Smith has been stayed.

The judge agreed Thursday to the Crown’s request for a stay of proceedings in the case.

The charge arose after a fight outside a Regina nightclub in August 2013.

Charges against two other former players, Dwight Anderson and Eron Riley, were dropped early in the proceedings.

Smith was released by the Riders in December after playing only three games in the 2015 season.

A stayed charge can be brought back within a year, but it’s rare.

What an abuse of power, and a total waste of resources. To put anyone through this for years, only to drop everything, should be unacceptable. There should never have been charges.

Just saw Taj going to Winnipeg. He was getting gas at Esso in Virden, MB. Meeting with the Bombers!

I really hope Taj lands on his feet and finds a job in the CFL. It is totally shameful he has been going through this for so long.

What a shame. How much time and money is Taj out? Just over some Queen City street punk that needed punching out.
