THE 1980-81 REGINA PATS
The 1980-81 Regina Pats set a franchise record with 49 wins. That feat was surpassed Wednesday night when the 2016-17 Regina Pats collected their 50th win with two games remaining in the regular season.
Kevin Gallant called Regina Pats games on CKRM in ’80-’81 and penned this memory of the season on Facebook last night:

“Back in 1981, a Regina Pats Team coached by Jack Sangster won 49 games. The General manager who put that team together was none other than Robert Strumm.
Brian Varga, Jock Callander aka the Rubberband Man, Dave (Boris) Michayluk, Garth Butcher and Barry Trotz helped lead the way. Pats lost out in the Division Finals to Mike Vernon and Calgary Wranglers (Doug Sauter) in six games. I still think we may have had a better fate that year because we had 13 days off because of the weird playoff schedule.
Grant Fuhr outdueled Mike Vernon to win the WHL Championship in a 7 game series and the Victoria Cougars who won 60 that year were eventually crowned Champions.
Great accomplishment for the Regina Pats of 2016-17. Hope you win the WHL Championship.”
*Kevin will be on 620 CKRM’s SportsCage today to discuss that season, and the current Pats.
