The Arizona Cardinals release former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Chris Streveler

After spending the last two seasons in the National Football League, Chris Streveler is officially a free agent. Streveler is widely known in Canada for his time as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, where he was a critical piece in the Blue Bombers 2019 Grey Cup puzzle.

The 26-year-old South Dakota star appeared in seven games with the Cardinals over two seasons, completing 17 of 25 passes, along with a touchdown and an interception.

“Maybe Chris Streveler will get an opportunity with another NFL team, and he probably will,” said Rod Pedersen on Tuesday’s show. “Maybe he stays in the NFL, and if you’re him, he probably exhausts all opportunities.”

For both Pedersen and co host Darren Dupont, it’s hard to say Streveler wasn’t given time on the field to succeed, he just didn’t make the most of it.

“He can’t say he didn’t get his opportunity in Arizona,” said Pedersen. “He started a must win game last year in week 17 for the Cardinals and couldn’t pull it off to make the playoffs. And then against the Carolina Panthers the other night he didn’t really get it done. Streveler can’t say he didn’t get his chance in Arizona.”

From his days in the CFL and at the University of South Dakota, we know Streveler is a big, physical player who isn’t afraid to run over defenders and take a shot as he fights for more yards.

The NFL has proven there is a place for the strong, physical, Swiss Army knife quarterback.

Look no further than the New Orleans Saints jack of all trades Taysom Hill, who spends time as tight end, receiver, running back, special teams and of course quarterback. This week, Hill agreed to a four-year extension with the saints, that pays according to the position he plays.

Is this something Streveler could see in the future, Dupont doesn’t seem so sure.

“Is Chris taking handoffs for Arizona, is he catching passes as a viable option and the answer is no,” said Dupont. “You can’t just be a short yardage under centre quarterback and expect him to be Taysom Hill.”

The question now is where Streveler will play his next snap of football. For the time being, many insiders expect Streveler to look at his options of joining another NFL team, but there is always a possibility he returns to the CFL.

“Frankly, for a CFL team right now, playoffs start this weekend,” said Pedersen. “Your roster is set. Your quarterback room is set. Chris Streveler is not coming back to the CFL this month.”

If Streveler decides his future lies in the CFL, the Blue Bombers would be the favorites to bring the Grey Cup champion back. But as Dupont points out, one crucial piece is missing for the success of Streveler.

“The shortest path back is to Winnipeg,” said Dupont. “But there is no Paul LaPolice, who was able to use him in those other situations to have some success.”

Only time will tell where the tough running quarterback will end up, though a few teams could use a tough running quarterback heading down the stretch in both the CFL and the NFL.
