THE DROUGHT CONTINUES…
Laycock |
CALGARY (CP) – Saskatchewan’s drought at the Brier has reached 35 years. Team Canada’s John Morris advanced to the semifinal at the Canadian men’s curling championship with an 8-7 win in an extra end over Saskatchewan’s Steve Laycock on Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Canada would win the semifinal over Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue 8-6 later in the evening.
In the 3-4 game, Canada had last-rock advantage in the extra end against Saskatchewan. Laycock’s attempt at tapping Canada’s shot stone off the back of the button with his final stone missed. Simmons didn’t have to throw his final stone.
Saskatchewan and Canada both finished 7-4 in the preliminary round to earn berths in the Page playoff between the third and fourth seeds. Laycock earned the higher seeding for the Page playoff game between them virtue of a win over Canada in the round-robin.
Laycock will play for the bronze medal Sunday against the semifinal loser. His current team of third Kirk Muyres, second Colton Flasch and lead Dallas Muyres finished just out of the playoffs at 6-5 in last year’s Brier.
“We’re light years better than we were last year at this time,” the Saskatchewan skip said. “Hopefully we can keep that progress going, but it’s going to be a challenge again to get out of our provincials. No guarantees in that, but if we get back here, I’d love to improve on this performance.”
Had lots of chances to win this. His 3rd should learn to listen to direction / strategy provided by the skip. Had too much to say – created doubt and DID NOT curl very well.
Win as a team lose as a team. He wasn't the only one not playing well that game. If this team can stay together to awhile they will be very good. Congrats on a good run!!
Which is the problem. The competition isn't there to get ready for this. On the separate note they all want to Skip rather than shut up and just do what they're told and make the shots.
It's not that Saskatchewan doesn't have the individual Curlers it's you can never put them in a mix where they accept their role because when you make a team they're used to being top dogs.
Mondetta is still a brand? lol
Does that somehow have a negative impact on your life? Why would you even bring that up?
Do what they're told? Accept their role? The skip isn't the be all end all..the third is supposed to be vocal and bounce ideas with the skip. I didn't see him overstepping his role.
Your right. The guy playing second needs to keep his yap shut.
Sure are a lot of geniuses on here.
