THE MULLEN REPORT

KANSAS CITY — It was a very comfortable 17 C that greeted both the players and fans as the Kansas City Chiefs held their last open to the public practice on the campus of Missouri Western University on Thursday.
With approximately 500 fans taking in the action, the practice started at 8:15. With the players practicing without pads, there was no hitting throughout this practice session. The majority of the practice was focused on 11 on 11 drills going both directions on the field. In addition to the 11 on 11 drills there were also, 11 on 6, some situational plays (3rd & 15 with 20 seconds on the clock, no time outs and needing a field goal to win the game) and some special teams punting.
Before practice started, while most of the team was stretching, seven players including Weston caught punts from the jug machine. Each player caught approximately eight balls before practice started.
With Weston participating in a total of 16 plays on offense, he had the ball thrown to him twice (both by QB Tyler Bray) and he caught it both times.
During the special teams portion of the practice, there were a total of nine punts and Weston caught three of them. He was the third punt returner to take the field.
With the Chiefs finalizing preparations for their second pre-season game, coach Reid ended practice by 9:35 and the temperature had only risen to a moderate 23 C.
For those fans that are wishing for Weston to re-appear in a Rider uniform, the first NFL cuts occur on August 26th. Given the 10 day exclusive NFL window, Weston could not re-sign with Riders until September 6th. The last NFL cut occurs on August 30 with waiver claims and practice squad offering occurring on August 31. If Weston survives the first round of cuts, but does not survive the second round, the earliest the Riders could re-sign him would be September 10.
During the 10 day exclusive NFL window, any one of the 31 remaining NFL teams could sign Weston. As Marc Trestman is very familiar with Weston and what he can do, the Chicago Bears are a potential option. However, we need to remember that the Bears already have former CFL star Chris Williams playing the same role Weston would. Therefore, the Bears at this time are not a good fit for Weston.

It would be nice to see something similar with Sheets. I've been hearing good things about him in OAK but realistically, will he be anything more than a 3rd stringer?
Realistically Weston knew when he embarked on his journey that the odds were heavily stacked against him. There are dozens more just like him in NFL camps, and dozens more that will not make a roster this season. Unless they get him into games, and actually get a package in place where he gets the ball in an area he can do what he does best. That remains to be seen. He needs to catch passes that he excels in. If the above logic is correct then there're are dozens and dozens of Dresslers that will be cut. Therefore there is no need to hope for a Dressler return, just sign 2 or 3 from the dozens out there. Shhhh don't tell the other GMs.
Weston Dressler was a heck of a good football player in the CFL game. He's not meant to be on the NFL's miniature field, unfortunately that was his fantasy, that's understood because he was raised south of the 49th. But they're going to tear the heart out of him the same way they castrate everyone that goes down there and doesn't fit the mold. He won't be worth signing when he returns. He'll be just another good young man spit out by the NFL. Thanks for your years in a Rider uniform, I wish you'd stayed.

If "Marc Trestman" is so interested, then wouldn't they have inquired when he was a free agent before signing with KC?
They never did … so why now after he can't make another team in the league. Trestman's interests are from the media not from the Bears.
