THE NEST PATS RECAP: MOOSE JAW 4 REGINA 1
Keith Hershmiller Photography |
REGINA – It took 20 games before the Regina Pats suffered their first home loss in regulation time and it came Saturday night against their top rivals.
Jayden Halbgewachs’ even strength goal at 3:10 of the first period stood up as the game-winner as the Warriors skated off with a 4-1 victory before a sixth consecutive sellout crowd of 6,484 in the Brandt Centre.
In fact the Warriors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Tristan Langan and Halbgewachs before the game was barely three minutes old. Sam Steel got the Pats on the board with his 31st of the season midway through the opening period and it was 2-1 for the Tribe after 20. Unfortunately for the Queen City Kids, that was all the offense they could muster on this night.
Brett Howden scored in the second frame for the Warriors and Halbgewachs added an empty-netter in the dying moments as the Warriors improved to 25-9-6-1 on the year and dropped the Pats’ home record to 15-1-4.
Some are calling the outcome the “Scruffy Curse” as our Mitchell Blair filled in on the Public Address duties for regular announcer Darren Szabo who was absent.
Regina outshot the visitors 40-38 while going 0/1 on the powerplay and 2/3 killing penalties.
Moose Jaw’s Zach Sawchenko won the goaltenders’ duel, making 39 saves to collect the win while the Pats’ Tyler Brown suffered the loss making 34 stops.
The win moved the Warriors to within four points of Regina for the Eastern Conference lead however the Pats still have three games in hand.
Next up for Regina (27-4-6-1) is a home date with the Tri-City Americans next Friday at 7:00 pm on 620 CKRM.

OK doom & gloomers- there goes the Mem Cup, first round playoff loss, trade Brooks, Wagner and Brown – you still have two days to improve the team.
Hobbs didn't haver to tell us on post game that they were quitters, that was self evident. Of course that's what Paddock was referring to after last night's game. Losing Cole and Smith cut the heart and grit out of this team. All you need to do is forecheck them a little bit and plug up the middle of the ice and they are done like dinner. They didn't win a battle all night which speaks to the grit and character on this team. They haven't played a full 60 minutes for some time, and maybe something they better get… Read more »
Go Riders Go!!!
Yepper…. Memorial Cup is gone, crowds will start to dwindle, Patsies are in Big trouble. Within 2 weeks Moose Jaw will take over 1st and that will be it.
Tremendous effort by the Tribe
Worst effort of the year!
Moose Jaw is more than capable of beating the pats in the playoffs
The sky is not falling but this result is not surprising either, as the Jaw has looked better of late than Regina or at least have demonstrated that the Pats will have to play very well to get by the Warriors come playoff time. While selling the farm is a bad idea for a chance at success for one year only, and thus far, the stakes have been high, it would seem that the contenders out west are attempting to get deeper to the point where even if Regina wins the east, the odds are they will not win the… Read more »
Don't matter no how. The London Knights are winning the Memorial Cup.
Scruffy curse. LOL!
It wasn't that Moose Jaw was that good, the Pats were that bad. When the Pats played like they can and do most nights, MJ couldn't get out of their end the whole third period. Sawchenko won them the game with his work especially in the third. The problem the Pats are facing is that winning without playing a full 60 minutes is developing a mindset that they can just skate onto the ice and two points will follow. Against both Medicine Hat and Calgary the Pats didn't play a full game and won. They tried that against MJ and… Read more »
You know things were bad when William Weppler does not post his game report!
Someone from Moose Jaw even won the 50-50!
Just a blip. Everyone in Medicine Hat is still talking about how the Pats kicked the Tigers butts last week.
Uh, no, no we aren't. Please get over yourself.
Ah….not so fast Anon :)) Was not at the game due to the Regina Mens Bonspiel. From the highlights looked like Sawchenko had a good game and we all know that a tender can steal a game quite easily. Was surprised the Sun came up today with all the Negative Nannies on here. First regulation loss at Home and it sounds like we are cellar dwellers. Only fools think the Pats are going to win all games and not have a bad game once in a while. Every good Team does and everyone who knows anything about hockey knows that.… Read more »
…once again Weppler looks at a couple of highlites and has everything figured out right…in all reality the Pats been beaten 11 times this year and that is hardly elite territory….the loser points have padded the numbers..looks like too much partying going on after Fridays games…this team hasn't played a full game for some time..now it's catching up…Paddock got rid of too much character and identity…that lineup needs an injection of guts and character…its bad when your assistant captain says you rolled over…surprising the guys would do that considering the trade deadline is still a couple days away…MJ wasn't that… Read more »
No doubt about it Moose Jaw has a very good team also, maybe lack some of the speed of the Pats. I thought the Pats played a good third period, just lacked the finish around the net. Surprised the Warriors traded Popuguav, but he will sure strengthen PG. Really impressed with the warriors defenseman Jett Woo, he is going to be a good one.
Yeah, blame that effort on the public address announcer. #sad
Nice plug last night for Sam Steel on Coach's Corner by Mr. Don Cherry! (And for Regina and other small markets for hosting World Juniors).
Nope…got nothing figured out…just that a loss to a good team is nothing to be alarmed over.
Which team do you support? Obviously not Warriors or Pats based on your comment.
