THIS WEEK IN COUGAR ATHLETICS
Women’s Soccer – The Cougars (1-1-0) started their Canada West schedule last weekend, losing 2-1 to Manitoba on Friday night but recovering for a 3-2 win over Winnipeg on Saturday. Veronica Boesch and rookie Sarah Moroziuk both had a goal and an assist on Saturday, while Olivia Bolen scored the game-winning goal in the Winnipeg game and Adriana McCullough had the lone goal on Friday. The Cougars have their home openers this weekend with games against Alberta (0-1-1) on Saturday and Mount Royal (1-0-1) on Sunday. Both games kick off at noon at the U of R Field.
Rams Football – The Rams (1-0) defeated No. 7-ranked UBC last Friday in their season opener, taking a 33-23 win over the Thunderbirds at Mosaic Stadium thanks to 430 passing yards from Cayman Shutter and a pair of touchdown catches by Addison Richards. They’re right back at it on Friday, as they’ll take on Manitoba (0-1) in a Week 2 matchup in Winnipeg that is Canada West Football on Shaw’s featured matchup. Men’s Hockey – The Cougars got in their first game action since their Germany tour in August on Tuesday, going on the road to defeat Briercrest College by a 5-2 score. They host the non-conference University of Regina Summer Challenge this weekend at The Co-operators Centre, beginning on Thursday night with a 7 p.m. game against Saskatchewan. The Cougars also take on Calgary (Friday, 5 p.m.) and Alberta (Saturday, 12:30 p.m.) at the four-day event. Find a full tournament schedule at www.reginacougars.com.
Cross Country – The Cougars have their first competition of the season and their only home meet this Saturday at Wascana Park. Starting gun for the women’s race will be at 12:15 p.m. with the men’s race scheduled for a 12:45 start. After this Saturday’s meet, the Cougars will have a weekend off before participating in the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota on Sept. 27.
