Women’s Hockey – The Cougars (3-1-0) are coming off a huge road weekend which saw them score two victories over Lethbridge, defeating the Pronghorns 2-0 on Friday thanks to a 45-save shutout by Jane Kish and following that up with a 4-3 win on Saturday. Regina is now tied with Alberta for first place in the Canada West standings with nine points, and the Cougars will be tested at home this weekend by a Manitoba team that’s 2-2-0 in conference play but is ranked No. 2 in the nation. The U of R will host the Bisons on Friday night (7:00) and Saturday afternoon (3:00) at The Co-operators Centre.
Rams Football – The Rams (1-5) took care of business on Friday, registering a 32-17 home win over Alberta to stay alive in the conference postseason race. Cord Delinte had a pair of interceptions and was named the Canada West Defensive Player of the Week, while quarterback Seb Britton performed admirably in his first career start with Noah Picton unavailable due to injury. The season will again be on the line for the Rams on Friday night, as they’ll travel to Calgary to face the No. 3-ranked and unbeaten Dinos (6-0) at McMahon Stadium. Game time is set for 7:00 (SaskTel maxTV 48/348).
Women’s Soccer – The Cougars (2-9-1) celebrated Senior Day for their four fifth-year players as Angela Lalonde, Ashton Lowry, Nikita Senko, and Brianna Wright all played their final home matches in a U of R uniform, but they lost twice to Pacific Division opponents. Victoria took a 4-0 win on Saturday, and No. 6-ranked UBC won 4-1 over the U of R on Sunday. Entering the final weekend of the conference schedule, the Cougars and Lethbridge are deadlocked for the sixth and final Prairie Division playoff position with the U of R holding the tiebreaker over the Pronghorns. But Winnipeg lurks just three points back, and that’s who the Cougars will match up with on Friday night. The U of R will close out Canada West play on Saturday night at Manitoba.
Women’s Volleyball – The Cougars closed out their non-conference schedule with a pair of wins over Saskatchewan at Ochapowace First Nation, winning in straight sets over the Huskies on Friday and in four sets on Saturday. Now the real season starts for the Cougars, who went 8-4 against U SPORTS opposition in non-conference play and are riding a five-match winning streak. They’ll open the Canada West schedule this Friday and Saturday against Trinity Western in Langley, B.C.
Men’s Hockey – The Cougars (0-3-1) were swept by Lethbridge over the weekend, losing by scores of 3-2 and 4-2 to a Pronghorns team that will host the U SPORTS Championship this coming February. Next up for the Cougars is a road trip to Manitoba, as they’ll square off against the Bisons (2-2-0) at the Max Bell Centre on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
Women’s Basketball – The Cougars went 2-1 at the Cougar Classic last week. They started out the tournament with a 75-58 win over Lakehead, lost a tight 80-73 game to Saskatchewan, and finished with a 77-68 victory over Lethbridge. The Cougars are now 3-2 in non-conference play and will travel to Toronto this weekend for the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic. They’ll start that tournament with a game against host Ryerson on Friday, then will meet either Bishop’s or York on Saturday.
Men’s Basketball – The Cougars had a perfect weekend at the Mickey Place Tournament in Charlottetown. They opened up with a 92-69 win over tournament host UPEI, then defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent by a 106-77 score before closing out with a wild 96-84 win over McMaster that saw them go on a 32-9 run in the second half of the third quarter. The Cougars went 6-1 against U SPORTS opposition in non-conference play and will now prepare for their Canada West openers at Calgary on Oct. 26 and Oct. 27.
Swimming – Brian Palaschuk led the way for the Cougars at the season-opening Fall Break Out at the Lawson Aquatic Centre, winning all three events he entered as he took first in the 100 free, 100 fly, and 200 medley. Lexy King and McKinley Penner both had first-place finishes on the women’s side, with King winning the 200 medley and Penner taking first in the 100 back. The Cougars will now prepare for their first major meet of the 2018-19 season, as they’ll take part in the Colleges Cup Pacific hosted by the University of British Columbia on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4.
Cross Country – The Cougars travelled to Victoria for the Vikes Invitational on Saturday. Greg Hetterley and Marc Turmel were 15th and 18th, respectively, to lead the men’s team to a fourth-place finish in the overall standings, while Tianna Dodds and Kaylee Tymo placed 23rd and 24th on the women’s side. The Cougars will compete next at the Stewart Cup in Calgary on Oct. 27, which will be their last tune-up meet before the U SPORTS Championships on Nov. 10.
