THIS WEEK IN COUGAR ATHLETICS
Rams Football (U SPORTS Ranking: No. 9) – The Rams (2-2) mounted a second-half comeback after a slow start on Saturday, but ultimately fell just short in an 18-16 loss to Manitoba at Mosaic Stadium. Now tied for third place in the Canada West standings with Saskatchewan, the Rams and the Huskies will meet for the only time this season on Friday in a Week 5 battle in Saskatoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Griffiths Stadium (620 CKRM, SaskTel maxTV 48/348, CanadaWest.tv).
Women’s Soccer – The Cougars suffered two defeats at home last weekend, falling 4-0 to the Calgary Dinos on Saturday and 2-1 to Lethbridge on Sunday. Regina (0-3-3) will hit the road this weekend for a Saturday game against the Alberta Pandas and a Sunday morning contest against Mount Royal University. Video webcasts for both matches will be available at CanadaWest.tv.
Women’s Volleyball – The Cougars started off non-conference play at home over the weekend by hosting the University of Regina Invitational, finishing the six-team tournament in fourth place with a 2-3 record. The team continues non-conference play this weekend in Winnipeg at the Unruh Realty Invitational, where they’ll meet Brock, tournament host Winnipeg, and MacEwan before the playoff round begins on Saturday night.
Men’s Volleyball – The Cougars open up the 2017-18 season with a non-conference tournament hosted by Brandon University from Friday to Sunday. They’ll play RSEQ teams Sherbrooke and Montreal on Friday, Canada West opponents Winnipeg and Brandon on Saturday, and a team to be determined in the playoff round on Sunday.
Women’s Basketball – The Cougars kicked off the campaign with a big win over Lakeland College in a Saturday exhibition game, defeating the Rustlers by a 109-36 margin. They’ll face U SPORTS opposition for the first time this season on Friday and Sunday as they’ll travel east to face McGill in Montreal and Carleton in Ottawa.
Men’s Hockey – The Cougars split a pair of non-conference games in Winnipeg last weekend, dropping a 3-2 decision against the Manitoba Bisons before bouncing back with a 4-2 win the following night. The Cougars will close their preseason schedule this weekend with two games south of the border against NCAA Div. I opposition. Saturday night will see the Cougars take on the St. Cloud State Huskies and Sunday will feature a matchup with the Minnesota State Mavericks.
Cross Country – After a weekend off from competition, the Cougars return to action at the University of Saskatchewan Open on Saturday in Saskatoon. After that, they’ll have two meets in October – the UVic Invitational and the Stewart Cup in Edmonton – leading up to the U SPORTS Championships on Nov. 12, which will also be hosted by the University of Victoria.
Women’s Hockey – The Cougars finished in first place at the Mandi Schwartz Challenge in Regina last weekend. After dropping their opener in a shootout, the Cougars responded with wins over Cougar Alumni, SAIT and Manitoba to finish the weekend at 3-1. The team will take this weekend off before kicking off the Canada West schedule with a home-and-home set against the Saskatchewan Huskies on Oct. 6 and 7.
