THURSDAY COMMENTARY – ONE DAY AT A TIME
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)
YOU’RE NOT GOING TO HEAR ANY COMPLAINING FROM ME!
I’D BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO LAST NIGHT’S GAME 5 BETWEEN THE CAPITALS AND PANTHERS HERE IN FLORIDA FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT.
FOR THE UNINITIATED, THE SERIES WAS TIED 2-2 GOING IN WEDNESDAY NIGHT BUT ALEX OVECHKIN AND THE CAPITALS JUMPED OUT TO A 3-0 LEAD AT FLA LIVE ARENA. ON CUE, THE COMEBACK CATS STORMED BACK AND TOOK THE GAME BY A 5-3 SCORE. FORWARD CARTER VERHAEGHE HAD FIVE POINTS AND IS WELL ON HIS WAY TO BECOMING A PLAYOFF HERO. HE SCORED THE OT WINNER IN GAME 4.
TO SAY I HAD A BLAST WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT. I SPLIT THE GAME BETWEEN THE PRESS BOX AND THE STANDS AND SOAKED IT ALL IN. (CHECK OUT MY INSTAGRAM STORY AT @RODPEDERSENOFFICIAL TO SEE FOR YOURSELF)
VISITING WITH SOME OF MY DAD’S SCOUTING BUDDIES IN BETWEEN PERIODS WAS A TREAT TOO. HOCKEY IS FAMILY.
ONE OF MY COUSINS SAID IT MUST BE WEIRD GOING TO HOCKEY GAMES IN FLORIDA BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHY SHE’D SAY THAT. IT’S COLD INSIDE BUT WHEN YOU WALK OUT THE DOORS IT’S LIKE WALKING INTO A STEAM ROOM, OR BEING WRAPPED IN A HOT, WET BLANKET.
I TOLD MY MOM OF MY PLANS BEFORE SHE DIED AND THAT IF I NEVER SEE A FLAKE OF SNOW AGAIN, I’D BE OKAY WITH THAT.
SHE REPLIED, “NOT ME. I NEED THE FOUR SEASONS.”
DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS I GUESS.
THAT’S NOT TO SAY I WON’T EXPERIENCE HAVING TO WARM UP MY CAR OUTSIDE THE RINK AFTER GAMES EVER AGAIN, BUT FOR NOW THIS IS WHERE WE ARE.
THAT’S THE BEAUTY OF LIVING ONE DAY AT A TIME, MAKING THE MOST OF EVERY SINGLE DAY, AND NOT LIVING IN THE PAST.
THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY

I have had so many waffling opinions regarding “winter” – yes they are long and brutal here. I do not miss driving/commuting on curling rink pebbled highways. Having stated that it changes for me and for the past 30+ years as I read the Hockey News I also read other materials. From my earliest memories the Mahon Arena in East Regina was cold, but the Glen Elm Library, at least, was a warm place. That’s where I found a collection of the short stories of Anton Chekhov. I was in my first year of high school; I’d never heard of… Read more »
