Thursday Commentary: Random Thoughts

There’s so much going these days and we’re going to try to cover them all in these random thoughts …

#1 – The feeling I get amongst Canadians is that they’re ready for the Stanley Cup Final to end! Yet they can’t get on with their summer till they find out who wins the Stanley Cup. And right now, that seems to be a 50/50 proposition although I’m sure there’s an analytical  probability stat out there for that somewhere.

#2 – You kind of wish the games would be decided on the ice but with so much time off in between games, the coaches and players are spending just as much time at the podium.

And the P.R. game between coaches Kris Knoblauch and Paul Maurice is fascinating to follow. Knoblach says his Oilers are playing with “house money” while Maurice says he doesn’t agree with the narrative that all the pressure has shifted to his Panthers.

My assessment? The series should be over by now.

#3 – The Flames dealing goalie Jacob Markstrom to New Jersey is front page news but it’s also nothing more than a formality. At age 34, he’s not going to be part of a rebuild in Calgary plus he’s made it clear he wanted out.

And make no mistake, the Flames are in rebuild and now it’s Dustin Wolf’s crease.

Not sure why they’re afraid to say it.

#4 – Week 3 in the CFL kicks off Thursday night with Ottawa at Montreal. It’s the first time since 2016 that the RedBlacks and Alouettes have met with both teams being above .500! Also, Montreal QB Cody Fajardo is 3-0 versus Ottawa, is on a 7-game win streak, and has thrown a touchdown in 10 straight games.

My picks for the week are Montreal, Winnipeg, Toronto & Saskatchewan.

#5 – Football and hockey have long been my sports lanes but baseball is making a strong push down the stretch. As a kid, hockey and baseball were my faves.

Broadcasting Miller Express games this summer in Moose Jaw has been a wonderful, refreshing experience and meeting the players and their families lately has been a great reminder of why I got into this business in the first place.

To have fun!

However friends who follow soccer are trying to get me into this big tournament that’s going on right now and apparently Canada plays Argentina tonight.

I think, I’m sorry to say, that I just can’t.

Sometimes it’s okay to say, “There’s just too much on my plate right now.”
