COMMENTARY: RIGHT OR WRONG

For this week, Thursday will be our random thoughts day. Here we go:

#1 – Again, that catchy tune “The Race Is On” by George Jones is echoing through our heads.

This time, it’s for the NFL because with three weeks to go, the race is on atop the conferences & divisions, for the wild card spots, and then at the bottom for the #1 pick.

The New England Patriots – at 3-11 – have already been eliminated and as we discussed yesterday, have brought in Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke to give him a look the rest of the way.

The Oakville product practiced with the Patriots for the first time on Wednesday and I’ve gotta say, looked darn good in red, white and blue, and the Pats’ silver helmet.

But then again, I think everybody does.

#2 – Slowly but surely I’m tackling this U.S. College bowl mania. It’s taken a couple of years and it’s like taking a sip from a firehose, but tonight here in Boca Raton, FL it’s the annual Boca Raton Bowl, this year featuring Syracuse versus South Florida.

Former CFL’ers and college greats Andrew Nowacki and Matt Dubuc will join our Boca Bowl special on the RP Show today live from the Beach House in Pompano Beach.

It’s our little slice of the gigantic pie that is Bowl season.

#3 – We are definitely starting to see some separation in the NHL races and in Canada, with months to go before playoffs, it almost feels like we can pencil in the playoff teams and there are some surprises.

It looks like the Leafs, Canucks and Jets will be in. Barring some miracles, or seriously getting their acts together soon, missing the playoffs will be the Flames, Oilers, Canadiens and Senators.

Debate at will.

And lastly #4 – I gratefully received a Ron & Don bobblehead in the mail this week from Regina’s Bill Edwards and posted a pic on social media. That immediately spawned a war with people ripping MacLean apart for being a bystander in Cherry’s axe’ing over four years ago for something the icon said on Hockey Night In Canada.

If there’s one thing I’ve noticed in sports, people never forget. Doesn’t matter if they’re right or wrong.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

I’ve got some bad news. The race is on indeed…. 1993 Dale Hunter obliterated Pierre Turgeon after he scored a goal. Dale Hunter got 21 games and Pierre Turgeon made a Lazarus like return from the dead…a week later to move on and play in the next round of the playoffs. Don Cherry said, “remeber kids… you never ever bail on a friend.” – imagine taking life advice from that guy? I encourage people to watch that Coaches Corner on Youtube – 30 years ago that pig was able to talk like that and similar to Jian Ghomeshi at Q… Read more »
