Thursday Commentary: Unbelievable
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
Just when you thought things couldn’t get whackier.
The University of North Carolina is set to introduce 72-year old Bill Belichick as its new head coach this week. The hiring was officially announced on Wednesday.
The move has “W-T-F” written all over it.
Now you’ve gotta be careful who you pay attention to because the world of sports – just like politics – is a game of P.R. spin and things rarely are what they seem.
What do I see?
Well, Belichick seems like the football guy of all football guys and it wasn’t sitting well with him to be out of the game in 2024 after a lifetime on the sidelines.
Don’t think that all the media appearances by Belichick were scratching the football itch.
Because they don’t.
It sounds like the Nashville product had an interview or two last off-season – most notably with Atlanta – but his reputation as a control freak preceded him and when the music stopped in football’s annual game of musical chairs, Bill didn’t have a seat.
Probably pretty embarrassing for an ego-maniac.
Now I’ve never met the guy so perhaps that’s unfair, but I know the type.
This off-season there will assuredly be multiple openings across the NFL with Dallas, the NY Jets and likely Jacksonville being among them.
Did Belichick want to wait on those, knowing there’s a chance he could be frozen out again? Or try his hand in the college ranks where his dad was once coach of the Tar Heels in the 1950s, and try something new?
That’s what it seems like to me.
However talk to any college coach and they’ll tell you that coaching is only a part of the job. Recruiting is at least as important and that’s something Belichick’s never done at that level.
And that part of the game’s become so gruesome that it caused Alabama’s Nick Saban to get out of it altogether.
And at age 72 Belichick’s going to give it a whirl?
Unbelievable.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

He is in the ACC and bringing along a GM. He is 15 wins away from breaking the all time NFL record. The powers that be in the NFL gathered at the synagogue and have frozen him out. A man has to work. “College” is now pro football. Bill Belichik will not be sitting in the living room of some pimply face teenager. He will not be reassuring some homeboy’s “mama” with the “Rev” reassuring the baby boy will get an education. It’s pro football. First order is the GM will get the NIL fund established and a lock on… Read more »
lol, imagine Rod calling someone else an ego-maniac. Pot met kettle today everyone.
OMG I love this so much! 😀
I would consider myself not only an ego-maniac but near the threshold of a meglo-maniac. It’s being ego driven that gets you through everthing without having to worry or depend on people. When an individual fosters a healthy even an unhealthy ego they are not held back. Bill Belichik did not get his first Head Coaching role until almost 20 years after starting as an Assistant on Ted Marchibroda’s staff. He bounced around and landed with the New York Giants – his “ego” allowed him to take what can now be described as mental/emotional abuse from Bill Parcells. It was… Read more »
Don’t recall anyone asking what you consider yourself, but meglo-maniac is one term that could be used for you. When you might actually be right for once about why a woman might choose a man for money. 25 years old with a 73 year old. Money no doubt, you choose not to comment. First time you have kept your mouth shut about women.

Oh no it’s not money. Not at all. This is the guy that ended up with a NY Giants Secretary after his first wife. In this case Bill needs an “activity”. Combine that with the fact she is doing this because she hates her father and this is daddy issue. Bill would have protected himself. She will have signed an N.D.A. She can stay over and use his stuff. – never to be taken as a domestic coupling or common law. He also has the waiver that any trips she takes is voluntary and its never to interpreted as “trafficking”.… Read more »
