Thursday Sports: Markstrom Dealt & More
NHL
- The Calgary Flames will have a new starting netminder next season after dealing Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils yesterday. In return, the Flames got 23-year-old defenceman Kevin Bahl and a 2025 first-round draft pick. General manager Craig Conroy says the deal demonstrates Calgary’s focus on infusing young players into its roster and acquiring draft capital while staying competitive.
- The Los Angeles Kings have acquired goaltender Darcy Kuemper from Washington in exchange for centre Pierre-Luc Dubois in a trade of underachieving players. Kuemper lost the starting job to Charlie Lindgren as the Capitals were swept by the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs. Dubois had just 16 goals and 40 points after signing a lucrative contract with the Kings before the season.
- The Stanley Cup final between the Oilers and the Florida Panthers is off until Friday’s Game 6 in Edmonton. The Panthers will try again to finish the series. Their 3-0 series lead has dwindled to 3-2. Game 7, if necessary, goes Monday in Sunrise.
CFL
The Montreal Alouettes will look to maintain their perfect record tonight as they host the Ottawa Redblacks. The Als are 2-and-oh to start the campaign after downing the Elks 23-20 in Edmonton last week. The Redblacks played their first game of the season last week and took a 23-19 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Ottawa.
MLB
TORONTO (AP) — Jarren Duran and Enmanuel Valdez hit solo home runs, Brayan Bello pitched six innings to snap a three-start winless streak, and Boston beat Toronto to complete a three-game sweep. The past eight series between Boston and Toronto have all been sweeps, with the Red Sox winning three. The Blue Jays and Orioles also had eight straight meetings finish as sweeps in 2009 and 2010. Toronto made four errors. The Blue Jays are 9-20 when they make at least one error.
