TUESDAY COMMENTARY – FUN AND NO GAMES

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

THIS APPEARS TO BE ONE OF THOSE “HOUR BY HOUR DEALS.”

THE CFL STRIKE HAS HIT DAY 3 AND, DEPENDING ON WHO YOU LISTEN TO, IT COULD END ANY MINUTE OR IT COULD STRETCH PAST THIS WEEKEND.

ONE THING I LEARNED DURING COVID IS THAT IN TIMES LIKE THIS, YOU REALLY NEED TRUSTED NEWS SOURCES. I GUESS WE’LL EVENTUALLY FIND OUT WHO’S TELLING THE TRUTH, BUT UP TILL NOW I’VE HEARD IT ALL.

WHEN I WAS TOLD TO “LIE” ON AIR BY MY EMPLOYERS FIVE YEARS AGO AND REFUSED, I KNEW MY DAYS WERE NUMBERED. THAT’S ONE OF THE WAYS SPORTS & MEDIA HAS CHANGED. NO INTEGRITY. I WONDER HOW MANY OTHER TALKING HEADS ARE FACING THE SAME ULTIMATUM RIGHT NOW?

ANYWAY, I WON’T SPEAK FOR YOU BUT I’M DEFINITELY ON THE SIDE OF THE PLAYERS IN THIS STRIKE. AS A MATTER OF FACT I’M SHOCKED THE PLAYERS HAD THE STONES TO WALK OFF THE JOB AFTER YEARS OF MISTREATMENT.

POPULAR ROUGHRIDER KICKER BRETT LAUTHER SAID OVER THE WEEKEND THEY’RE STANDING UP TO THE CFL’S OLD BOYS CLUB, AND DOING WHAT’S BEST FOR THE GENERATION OF PLAYERS THAT’LL COME AFTER THEM.

A VERY NOBLE STANCE INDEED.

BUT I’M NOT SURE IT MATTERS. THE CFL OLD BOYS CLUB CONTINUES TO CONSIST OF OLD(ISH) RICH BOYS WHO ALWAYS GET THEIR WAY.

YOU’RE FINDING OUT THIS WEEK WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY DON’T GET THEIR WAY. THEY TAKE THEIR BALL AND GO HOME, AND REFUSE TO TALK ABOUT IT.

NOT MUCH GETS ACCOMPLISHED THAT WAY.

IT’S WHAT’S HELD THE CFL BACK FOR YEARS AND WHILE A DEAL WILL EVENTUALLY GET DONE – IT HAS TO – THE CFL’S PROBLEMS WILL REMAIN FOR YEARS TO COME. REMEMBER THAT THIS ISN’T LIKE THE NFL OR MLB; THEY’RE NOT FIGHTING OVER BILLIONS OF DOLLARS HERE. THE CFL IS IN TERRIBLE FINANCIAL SHAPE AND THEY’RE FIGHTING OVER SCRAPS.

I WONDER WHAT NEW BC LIONS OWNER AMAR DOMAN AND NEW EDMONTON ELKS PRESIDENT VICTOR CUI THINK ABOUT ALL THIS? THEY MIGHT BE WONDERING WHAT THEY GOT THEMSELVES INTO.

SOME MAY THINK THIS P-R BATTLE IS NOTHING MORE THAN FUN AND GAMES BUT I CAN ASSURE YOU IT’S NOT FUN FOR ANYONE.

AND AS IT STANDS RIGHT NOW, THERE AREN’T ANY GAMES EITHER.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV across Canada and the USA. You can also watch on YouTube Live and listen 24/7 at RodPedersen.com/ListenLive)

The ‘Western Redneck’ in me suspects that the main cause of all this is the fact that the Argos are owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. They want the CFL to fail.

The Western Redneck in you should go get a CAT scan. The MLSE is doing this strictly as a favor. Today they could easily suspend operations and hold onto the Toronto Argonauts brand. Whether it’s the CFL, XFL, USFL, so be it. They will find an operating environment that works for them. I can only imagine Larry Tannenbaum looking at his day planner. NHL Governor meetings in Florida. NBA Governor meetings in Las Vegas – oh yeah he has to go to a CFL Board Meeting and waste his time with this crap. Here’s the deal. I really hope the… Read more »

With the United Football Players Association petition to the NLRB in the US, the landscape in Sports labor has decidedly tipped back towards the players. The UFPA has aligned with the United Steel Workers Union. This is the same umbrella Union that the CFLPA is under. The CFL players no longer have to look over their shoulders and worry about a huge pool of available athletes chomping at the bit to replace them. The UFPA filed to organize the USFL Players currently in season in Birmingham AL. Further, the XFL III has said on record that they want to see… Read more »

is this strike a joke!!!!!!! they wait all year with Ambrosie gallivanting around the country doing nothing but acting like a politician, then they decide to talk about the CA a few weeks before training camp?? The way this league is run is more than a joke. Good thing us loyal CFL fans love our football and put up with these losers. Players deserve better, fans deserve better.

Oh how I wish the Canadian Football League (CFL) would just go away once and for all never to exist again, then Dwayne Johnson can come in and establish a bonafide professional league on Canadian soil in conjunction with his XFL venture and possibly merging with the USFL as a feeder league to the NFL.
