Tuesday Commentary: Help Yourself

It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: It’s good that the hockey season ended Monday night and Canadians can now get on with their summer.

There are some great stories going on in other leagues which have been overshadowed by Florida’s run to the Cup and the most intriguing Stanley Cup Final in 80 years.

The Regina Red Sox have won 11 in a row in the Western Canadian Baseball League while the Saskatchewan Rattlers jumped out to their best start in franchise history in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.
Of course there’s our beloved CFL, which I’ll get to in a minute.

Next the great: Just to give you a peak behind the scenes, you all likely saw the celebrations of the Florida Panthers Monday night with the Cup, like Matthew Tkachuk, Sergei Bobrovsky, Paul Maurice and the rest of their big names.

But what you don’t see is the broadcasters and support staff; many of whom have been with the club since Day 1, 30 years ago. Their elation is tenfold compared to what you saw on the ice, and they’ve been through some really tough times. I’ve talked to a lot of them since last night.

Here’s the life tip on that: You can’t truly appreciate and enjoy the light until you’ve gone through the darkest of the dark.

So happy for them!

And finally the ugly: We’re gonna be talking CFL likely daily on the RP Show over the next six months but what invariably comes up from the viewers are the thousands of empty seats in places like Edmonton, Calgary, Sask and Toronto.

Sure, ticket sales are up in BC and Montreal but they’ve got winning teams finally and if fans will only buy tickets for a winner, you’ve got a big problem.

Have you ever heard the saying, “You’re only as strong as your weakest link?”

Coming out of the weekend multiple people put a time limit on 10 years left for the CFL.

I don’t believe that for a second, but you’ve got to help yourself.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

“Coming out of the weekend multiple people put a time limit on 10 years left for the CFL.”

I’ve been hearing variations on that theme since I became a CFL fan decades years ago. Some of those prophets of doom have already moved on to the great beyond. The CFL is batting 1.000 in burying every one of its would-be undertakers.
