TUESDAY COMMENTARY: JUMP OR GET PUSHED?
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time for another edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly!
First the good: Whether you’re into or it or not, the CFL’s annual National Combine goes this weekend in Edmonton at the Fieldhouse at Commonwealth Stadium.
It’s one of the top events on the CFL calendar yearly; right up there with the Draft, opening day, Free Agency and the Grey Cup.
I talked to a Stampeders coach about it over the weekend and he was bubbling with excitement, saying I should be there because everyone who’s anyone with the CFL will be.
I think I will. And just talking about these things in forums like this is good for the CFL. In fact I got a great CFL story for tomorrow’s Commentary. Come on back for that.
Next, the great: Ratings are going to be boffo for Tuesday night’s World Baseball Classic championship game in Miami between defending champion USA and two-time winner Japan.
In truth, I bowed out of the WBC when Canada did but it was hard to ignore the fireworks on social media Monday night which went with Japan’s 6-5 comeback, walk-off victory over Mexico in a semifinal at the Marlins park.
These names are the greats of the game; Shohei Ohtani, Randy Arozarena, Mike Trout. They’ll be talking about this tourney for years!
It’ll be interesting to follow where it goes. Injuries to star players over the past 10 days have some in the game thinking they could do without it.
And lastly, the ugly: How did you know it’s the Calgary Flames?
With a performance like last night’s humiliating 8-2 loss in L.A., it would be hard for even the most positive Flames fan or supporter to sell this team making the playoffs.
They put up a very brief fight at the beginning of the game but then caved like a wet cardboard box and were quickly down 3-0. The Kings had more goals after the first period than Calgary had shots.
Even I’m starting to wonder who walks the plank for this.
And for a brief second, I had the notion that Darryl Sutter might pull a Paul Maurice and do the walking himself before he gets pushed.
Chalk that up to another thing that’s going to be interesting to watch this spring.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV, WQEE Radio and YouTube Live)
Daryl Sutter is not the issue with that team. He’s part of it, but he can’t make chicken salad out of chicken dung. It goes right back to when for some unknown reason yet another NHL team decided to hire Brian Burke and have him tell them how the organization is to run. This means Jay Feaster who constructed an NHL Stanley Cup winner in Tampa is punted and in his place the handpicked Assistant GM of the Arizona Coyotes gets the job. The exact same resume to a lesser degree than the pre-Semple Regina Pats braintrust. These type of… Read more »
