TUESDAY COMMENTARY: “PROGRESS”

It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time for another edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: It’s real good to have old friends you can rely on. Including those in high places!

Longtime Winnipeg broadcaster Brian Munz came on the RP Show Monday to analyze the Jets, who’ve lost three games in a row going into tonight’s home date with the Oilers.

As a high school’er in Humboldt, Munzie used to visit me in the broadcast booth with the P.A. Raiders 30 years ago!

Regarding the Jets, Brian said there’s mild panic in the Manitoba capital but you know what? Let’s just get to the playoffs. That’s all anyone’s waiting for.

Next the great: Can’t tell you how heartwarming it was to have the people of Wolseley come to me for assistance in winning the Kraft Hockeyville competition. We’re actually going to have them on our TV show today!

It’s high time a Saskatchewan community won this thing and I got a good feeling about this one.

It’s great to know people don’t forget.

And lastly, the ugly: If the football people’s goal was to get fans talking during this downtime in the calendar, they accomplished it.

Monday’s news that the NFL is banning the “hip drop tackle” beginning this season caused more bellyaching than a Justin Trudeau speech.

Texans great J.J. Watt said he doesn’t even know what a hip drop tackle is! (Good, so I’m not alone).

Look, I’m a champion of change, but not just for the sake of change.

In hockey, what I’m hearing in the press boxes in the NHL is that the league should change its current wildcard playoff formula back to the old 1-versus-8 format because it’s unfair to the current Top 4 teams in the West that one’s assured of being bounced in Round 1.

Has anyone heard of the phrase “an anomaly”? Or, “Life’s hard wear a helmet”?

Apparently not. And to me kneejerk changes are real ugly, but they come disguised as being “progress”.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm & 5 pm on Game+TV, WQEE Radio, Podcast & YouTube Live)

Seriously dude, the cry for a change in playoff format has been going on for years by the East, specifically the Leafs because they play Boston, Florida or TB every year. Weird that you’d act like this is new and teams in the West are pushing it.

Long as the Loafs get their azzes kicked I don’t care which playoff format they use or which team buries them.

Great stuff 1) As a natural contrarian in the Skip Bayless mode let me point some things out. First and foremost to be the best you have to beat the best. In all my time watching the NHL playoffs the team that is supposed to win; wins. This means if you’re an 8th seed L.A and get 2 Cups; nothing was rigged it was earned. There are no easy nights and however the deck gets shuffled you have to play the best. Imagine the 1980s if Calgary or Winnipeg cried because they had to go through Edmonton. Well Vancouver got… Read more »
