TUESDAY COMMENTARY – THE BOBBY HULL YOU DIDN’T KNOW

Monday was quite a day in the National Hockey League!

What was front-and-centre for good reason was the passing of the iconic Bobby Hull at the age of 84.

Later in the day, things got shaken up mightily with the Vancouver Canucks dealing captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders.

But really, all the headlines belong to the Golden Jet.

When I think of Bobby Hull, I think “That’s a hockey player!” But there are lots of hockey players. Millions of them in fact.

If you look up any biography of Robert Marvin Hull today, it says “Regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time.”
That in itself, is enough. But there’s more. He’s won every major trophy, including the Art Ross, the Hart, the Lady Byng, and of course the Stanley Cup in 1961. And Bobby set many records for goal-scoring along the way, and was credited along with teammate Stan Makita for inventing the curved stick.

Even watching the tributes today, I found it interesting that Bobby said it was “a mistake” to leave Chicago for the WHA and Winnipeg and a million dollar deal in 1972.

Oh well, you can’t go back.

But the one thing I wanted to recognize Bobby for here today is being a member of the Canadian Hereford Association Hall of Fame. Because of my family’s history in the cattle industry, I’m well aware that Bobby Hull is an icon within that community too.

He may be a city kid from Belleville, ON but Bobby fell in love with Hereford cattle at a young age and grew a herd up to 125 cows which at one time was based near Whitewood, SK.

To this day Bobby’s recognized worldwide as an ambassador for Hereford cattle.

Somehow Hull will always be linked to Red & White.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Bobby Hull won’t be canceled. This era/generation will pass and this guy stands in the mountain top alone. Wayne Gretzky is responsible for modern Era hockey? To that I say pfft. First off. These people/places/things need to bronze this man’s jock strap and hang it in the rafters: 1) Chicago. An absolute garbage original 6 franchise. This guy put it on the map. If he didn’t entertain those fans the building would be empty. Nobody would pay money to see montreal, Detroit and Toronto beat the wagon off them for decades. Hull and Makita were basically eberle/weal because other than… Read more »

Wow.. just wow. What an absolute garbage post. I’m married and I know it’s not ok to hit your wife. What’s wrong with you?

My guess is you’re the type of guy that would say. “My wife stuck by me when I had cancer or my wife stuck by me as I battled addiction.”

My response is to tell the truth. I say, “How do you know she didn’t give it to you?”

Bobby hull kept how many busses waiting because he signed every autograph.

Dennis hull commented that some 4th liner and had their been a 5th line the guy would have played on that said it’s a waste of time. Dennis said “we are waiting for Mr hull. If it were you then believe me the bus would leave”

End of the day his name is on the Cup and that makes a person immortal and remembered forever.

Colorado can thank Bobby hull for their 3 Stanley cups. Denver lost their NHL franchise. They were not even a consideration for expansion. Without Bobby hull there are no Quebec Nordiques. Without an emergency relocation then Denver doesn’t get a team.

3 cups later.

Canceling Bobby would be akin to trying to cancel george jones for his off stage antics.

It ain’t happening.

If Bobby Hull had been playing in the ’72 Summit Series it wouldn’t have went down to the final minute of game eight to decide who won.

Again I don’t want to sound like it’s a rant. This is another example or Canada doing their colonial white wash of actually history. First off it wasn’t a series. It was an 8 game exhibition with separate individual games. Out of 8 games one ended in a time. This leaves 7 remaining. Canda wins by 1 goal in the dying seconds and claims eternal victory forever more. Like Phil’s game 1 speech after they got blown clear off the ice somehow made them a better entity by game 8. It was 8 games, 1 tie, Canada won 4, Soviets… Read more »
