TUESDAY COMMENTARY – THE FEATURED GAME
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 FM & Rock 98.5 FM)
FROM THE MOMENT MY FEET HIT THE FLOOR THIS MORNING, MY MIND’S BEEN ON “THE GAME”.
WE’VE INTRODUCED A NEW FEATURE ON THE R-P SHOW WHERE EACH DAY WE DISCUSS OUR “FEATURED GAME” OF THE NIGHT – ASKING FOR THE VIEWERS’ OPINIONS TOO – AND IT’S BEEN A LOT OF FUN.
AND FOR ME, TONIGHT’S WASHINGTON CAPITALS/FLORIDA PANTHERS CLASH HERE IN SUNRISE, FLORIDA IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS.
IT’S FOR SUPREMACY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE (IF ONLY FOR A NIGHT OR TWO).
DON’T LOOK NOW BUT THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS OWN THE MOST POINTS IN THE NHL AT 33, BUT I LEGIT DON’T TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY. THE CAPITALS HAVE 33 AS WELL, AND LEAD THE METROPOLITAN DIVISION.
THE PANTHERS HAVE 31 POINTS, THE EXACT SAME AS THE WESTERN CONFERENCE-LEADING CALGARY FLAMES, WHOM MANY WESTERNERS WOULD TELL YOU ARE THE BEST TEAM IN THE NHL.
I’VE OFTEN SAID YOU CAN FIND SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT ANY GAME, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK TOO FAR IN THE CASE OF THIS ONE TONIGHT AT FLA LIVE ARENA.
IN 2015 HERE, I WATCHED THESE SAME CAPITALS WITH ALEX OVECHKIN AND WAS UNIMPRESSED. I TOLD CAPS ASSISTANT GM ROSS MAHONEY THAT THEY’LL NEVER WIN WITH OVECHKIN, AS THAT NIGHT HE JUST RAN AROUND CHEAPSHOTTING OPPONENTS AND WASN’T FOCUSED ON THE GAME.
ROSS JUST SMILED AND NODDED. THREE YEARS LATER OVIE WAS SKATING AROUND WITH THE STANLEY CUP.
HEY – I’M NOT ALWAYS RIGHT, BUT I’LL ALWAYS GIVE MY OPINION.
THE CAPS BEAT THE PANTHERS 4-3 ON FRIDAY NIGHT IN WASHINGTON AND OVECHKIN HAD THREE POINTS. HE’S SECOND IN THE NHL WITH 19 GOALS AND CHASING GRETZKY.
AND TONIGHT I’LL HAVE A FRONT ROW SEAT.
HOW BOUT THAT.
