TUESDAY COMMENTARY: THE GOOD, GREAT & THE UGLY

It’s Tuesday and time for another edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: There’s lots of good news in sports these days.

The best? Likely that Canada boasts four legitimate Stanley Cup contenders: Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto.

As we hit the midway point, I’ll stick by our preseason prediction of a Leafs-Oilers Stanley Cup Final.

Don’t take that to the bank, but it should be a GREAT preview tonight at Rogers Place.

Next the great: Leave it to a goalie to talk some sense into people.

Florida Panthers All Star tender Sergei Bobrovsky explained to the media Saturday night that their 4-1 loss to the Devils – which snapped their win streak at nine – was a good thing.

Bob said regular season streaks don’t matter and all that matters is to tune up for the playoffs; which are half a season away.

Bobrovsky’s comments left the media and fans scratching their heads but I totally got it, and have been saying it for months.

And lastly, the ugly: Round 1 of the NFL Playoffs is behind us. Six games over three days, and the Texans, Chiefs, Packers, Lions, Bills and Buccaneers are all moving on.

You know we prefer to be positive here, rather than negative, but one glaring blemish on the weekend was that five of the six games were largely blowouts. Double digit margins of victory.

Only Sunday night’s Detroit 24-23 win over the L.A. Rams came down to the last minute.

But your ticket doesn’t guarantee you a close game in the small print.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

The only legitimate National Hockey League championship contender is the Vancouver Canucks. They have a very good team top to bottom including the coaching staff. A great goaltender in Thatcher Demko plus his backup. Remember they slaughtered the Edmonton Oilers before Xmas. Edmonton and Toronto don’t have the goalkeeper to go long, Winnipeg has a good adequate goalie but they’re lines are in disarray with injuries. Take Vancouver Canucks to get near Lord Stanley 2024.
