TUESDAY COMMENTARY: THE GOOD, THE GREAT & THE UGLY
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
It’s Tuesday and time for another colourful edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly!
First the good: March Madness is simply a phenomenon that is one part great basketball and an equal part great marketing.
It all culminated Monday night in Phoenix with the UConn Huskies knocking off Purdue 75-60 for their second straight national title. Don’t tell me tournament’s always been big in Canada because it hasn’t; of all my friends over a half century, I only knew three who hosted a bracket every year (Marc Mueller, Jeff Armstead & Steve Powell).
But the takeaway, for me, from this year’s event is Iowa sensation Caitlin Clark and what she means to womens sports. You go girl!
Next the great: The Calgary Stampeders announced Monday that Wally Buono will be added to their Wall of Fame at a home game this July.
What more can really be said about the Godfather? He had Hall of Fame careers with each of the Stampeders and BC Lions and will finally be rightfully honoured over 20 years after being needlessly fired by an idiot owner.
I love Wally, but didn’t always. I think any hard feelings were over the fact our Riders could never beat his teams but that all changed in 2007.
Wally was a rare breed … a guy who knew the game inside out but also knew the CFL needed to be promoted. He never turned me down for an interview and was always cordial. Still is.
Not every CFL coach can say the same but then again, they’re not going up on the Wall of Fame either.
And finally, the Ugly: My advisor in Florida whom I’ve been listening to for the past few years told me to “block out the noise” recently. But that’s all she said.
These coaches drop tidbits and then you’re left to figure it out for yourself! I’m taking it that she means the noise on social media and to be honest, ignoring the malcontents has been quite freeing.
Jays fans are a great example. After a 4-6 start they were squawking like never before but following Monday’s 5-2 win over Seattle in the home opener, they all fell silent.
Or maybe that’s just because I turned them off.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm & 5 pm on Game+TV, WQEE Radio, Podcast & YouTube Live)
Great Stuff; NCAA Basketball for the “tournament” – for motivation and building organizations I follow alot of the coaches. This goes back to my first NCAA tournament when it was Jerry Tarkanian and UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. That was also when Duke finally became Duke. Jerry Tarkanian similar to Jimmy Johnson @ Miami, and in recent times Roy Shivers in the CFL would recruit gangstas – fast forward to 2024 and these are what sociologists call at risk yutes. The point being – where there is money to be made and that’s all this NCAA stuff is. It was always professional… Read more »
The men’s NCAA tournament has always been a big deal in Canada, I assume it’s getting bigger but the following has always been there. Unfortunately I am sure NCAA basketball in Canada has a much bigger following then CIS ( I am sure gambling is a major reason)
Catlin Clark has brought it to a whole other level of exposure for women’s basketball and I hope that also transcends to other female sports!
Huh? Don’t even start. Exposure for women’s basketball? Please; you couldn’t name 5 players without google; and if you can you’ve got an entire different motivation and agenda. Female Sports are not on the level of male sports and I’m just waiting for the day when the guys who can’t play; figure out if they change biological identity they can win gold and get paid. I’m all for trans people in female sports. It shows the level drop off that at best it’s recreation level with super competitive little girls. That’s good because it gives them an activity. You know… Read more »
Wow women’s sports getting traction got you unhinged? For a guy who uses past male pornstars for names on here and your useless rants that take away from the topic you probably got some bigger issues going on. I am here to chat and engage in sports conversation not political rants. Maybe take your concerns to a political site?
It really must live in your head when you see amazing women and female athletes do things and live a life better than you and will have a bigger impact on this world then you ever will!
….well the way you go about it; it’s like you are angling for a date. Makes sense – we don’t have buckle bunnies anymore. Puck bunnies are long gone. Ring rats are not on the horizon. Looks like you’re taking the place. You can spend the winter at U of R Women’s games looking all cute. Make sure you do the Taylor Swift thing and cheer loud!!! Even if you don’t know if the ball is filled with air or bubbles. Jordan Peterson is very clear on male feminists. You guys are the trojan horse/sneaky fish types. I got no… Read more »
This whole post reflects your very sad life and the image that you try and portray yourself as. I suspect your quite the opposite in person … Jordan Petersen would roll his eyes at someone like you for using him as an example. If you’re so bothered by female sports why keep bringing it up? Why do these women leagues bother you so much you have a need to constantly come on here and rant like a fool? No one is forcing you to talk about it. By the way I think it’s awesome my teenage daughter who is active… Read more »
…..ask your daughter if she could cook a meal and if she can’t just keep her away from my son. Merle Haggard talks about times when a man could still work…still would….and a woman could still cook…..still would….
Mam the truth does not answer questions.
