TUESDAY COMMENTARY: THE GOOD, THE GREAT & THE UGLY

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

IT’S TUESDAY AND THAT MEANS ANOTHER STIRRING RENDITION OF THE GOOD, THE GREAT, AND THE UGLY!

FIRST, THE GOOD: I HAVE TO SAY, FOR TODAY, IT’S THE EDMONTON OILERS. THEY’RE GOOD AS FAR AS TRAINWRECKS GO.

I SMILED WHEN I OPENED MY SCORE APP THIS MORNING AND SAW THE OILERS HAD SPANKED ARIZONA 6-1 LAST NIGHT.

REMARKABLY THE OILERS ARE ONLY TWO POINTS BEHIND L-A FOR SECOND-PLACE IN THE PACIFIC DIVISION AND THAT’S DESPITE THE HORRENDOUS GOALTENDING THEY’VE SUFFERED THROUGH ALL YEAR.

IT LOOKS LIKE THE OILERS ARE GOING TO BE IN THE PLAYOFFS, AND THAT’S GONNA MAKE FOR SOME MUST-SEE TV.

NEXT, THE GREAT: YOU’LL BE SURPRISED BUT FOR ME, IT’S THE WILL SMITH/CHRIS ROCK FIASCO FROM SUNDAY NIGHT’S OSCARS CEREMONY.

“THE SLAP” IS ALL ANYONE’S TALKING ABOUT TWO DAYS LATER (IT WAS FAKE BY THE WAY) AND IT SHOWS MAYBE WE’VE MOVED ON FROM COVID DOMINATING THE DAILY DISCUSSION.

TO ME, THAT’S GREAT.

AND FINALLY, THE UGLY: THAT’S, UNFORTUNATELY, THE ARIZONA COYOTES.

BY VIRTUE OF MONDAY’S LOSS AT EDMONTON, THE COYOTES ARE THE FIRST WESTERN CONFERENCE TEAM ELIMINATED FROM STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF CONTENTION WITH THE NHL’S WORST RECORD.

IT’S JUST SO … SAD.

THE LAST TIME I WAS IN ARIZONA – THREE OR FOUR YEARS AGO – THE COYOTES FELT THEY WERE IN YEAR 3 OF A 5-YEAR REBUILD.

NOW THEY’VE BEEN KICKED OUT OF THEIR RINK, HAVE THE WORST TEAM IN THE NHL, AND HAVE A REVOLVING DOOR OF COACHES.

ARIZONA HASN’T FAILED THE NHL. THE NHL HAS FAILED ARIZONA.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY.

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV Network across Canada and the USA. Call your cable provider for details. You can also watch on YouTube Live and listen 24/7 at RodPedersen.com/ListenLive)

The Bad

Eugene Melynk passed away at 62 years old.

There was a comment or column on here once that said, “Health is Wealth” – the man was only 62 years old, but had that liver transplant in 2015.

As the old saying goes you can’t take it with you and he who has the most toys doesn’t win.

Go live life to the fullest people.

The NHL has failed the Arizona how exactly?, that’s a ridiculous statement. The NHL has bent over backwards to keep that sad sack franchise there , for what reason is anyone’s guess. Is the NHL supposed to hire management and coaches for them too? Nobody goes because the on ice product has been garbage since the day they landed there, arena location is a convenient excuse.

I was in Mesa, Arizona years ago and the idea was “hey let’s go to Coyotes games.” – do you know where this rink is located? Picture going to a Regina Pats game and head to Swift Current but you’re not in Swift Current you’re in Hodgeville. Arizona has had hockey for over 50 years. There are snowbirds, North East Americans and repatriated Canadians that would love to go to games. It is not in anyway convienant to build a fanbase. You get to Glendale and it’s a nice place, but did you ever see the 1996 movie From Dusk… Read more »
