It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: Sometimes it’s not just the games in sports we love to analyze. It’s the off-field incidents too. The NFL world’s still buzzing about the older black lady – Lynn Jones of the Jacksonville Free Press – who offered an unsolicited, encouraging pep talk to Jaguars coach Liam Cohen in his postgame news conference right after his team lost to Buffalo in an AFC wildcard game.

ESPN’s Pat McAfee is right: the old curmudgeon writers who’ve owned the sports media for decades got exposed over their hostility towards Ms. Jones. I can’t disagree and for that, I’m swinging over to her side!

Maybe country singer Glen Campbell had it right when he sang, “Try A Little Kindness”.

Next the great: Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take much to get Sabres fans back on board. After firing GM Kevyn Adams, Buffalo’s gone on a tear, winning 13 of 14 games heading into Monday’s home date with Florida. The barn was full to watch an entertaining game which went down to the final minutes, with the Panthers winning 4-3.

Having the Sabres relevant again feels so right.

And finally the ugly: There’s a huge shift happening in the media now and fans, viewers and listeners are figuring out they can get the real story from podcasts rather than the mainstream. That’s just the way it is.

After being torched by ESPN, NFL great Shannon Sharpe started a podcast and it’s immediately become very popular. Sharpe just spits facts, like the latest revelation that Troy Aikman – who’s advising for the Miami Dolphins – will never have a prominent role with the Dallas Cowboys because Owner/GM Jerry Jones refuses to share the spotlight. So basically, Jerry would rather lose if it means he can still be the star of the show.

Hey – it’s not something us Cowboy fans didn’t already know. But because of truth-sayers like Shannon Sharpe, everybody else is finally seeing how ugly it really is.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

Lynn Jones of the Jacksonville Free Press….does anyone have insight into that particular media outlet and who it plays too; and more specific the county of Duval where Jacksonville is located?…..people would be safer in Rhodesia. What she did was no different than what Bob Hughes did with the Regina Leader Post or Dave Naylor does with TSN. Create a false sense of safety hoping people go there develop narratives. Then it inflates their sense because now they are the gatekeepers. I still think back to when CFL Coaches had to subject themselves to Jim Hunt and Terry Jones. How… Read more »
