TUESDAY COMMENTARY – UNTOUCHABLE?
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)
It’s Tuesday and that means another edition of The Good, The Great & The Ugly – a hockey edition. We’re not talking nearly enough hockey here!
First, the good: It very clearly has to be the Buffalo Sabres. They smoked Detroit 8-3 on Monday and forward Tage Thompson had six points! He’s just the sixth player in Sabres history to accomplish the feat and the first since Pat Lafontaine 30 years ago.
Everybody laughed at Sabres GM Kevyn Adams when he took over the job a few years ago with no experience, fired the coach, and traded away Jack Eichel. Now they’re clearly the most improved team in the NHL.
So happy for Kevyn Adams to prove the doubters wrong.
Next, the great: It’s Hall of Fame Calgary Flames voice Peter Maher who stopped by the RP Show Monday here at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino.
Pete retired in 2014 but is still close to the scene, and has lots of wisdom.
He says the most key segment in an NHL season is the one we’re about to embark on; Games 15 to 30 in your schedule.
If you got off to hot start, or a bad one, or a mediocre start, this upcoming 15-game stretch will determine your season.
When Pete speaks, we shut up and listen.
And lastly, the ugly: Really it’s not ugly at all, depending on how you look at it, but Alexander Ovechkin is on the cusp of breaking some long-standing records.
Ovie scored Monday night in the Caps’ 3-2 shootout loss to Carolina and moved within one goal of Gordie Howe’s record for most goals in a career with a single franchise.
Alex is going to break that, and has Wayne Gretzky’s overall goal record in sight which seemed unattainable 20 years ago. Wayne of course set it with four different teams: the Oilers, Kings, Blues and Rangers.
So to think someone could ever trade away Wayne Gretzky because of greed and ego …
That’s ugly.
