TUESDAY COMMENTARY – WHAT’S IN A GAME?

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

THE CFL IS INDEED BACK, AND WEEK 1 IS AT HAND.

ARE WE GOING TO TURN THIS COMMENTARY INTO A DAILY CFL BRIEFING?

I COULD GO FOR THAT.

WE’LL SEE.

BUT AS CANADA’S PRO FOOTBALL LEAGUE GETS SET TO KICKOFF THE 2022 SEASON THURSDAY NIGHT WITH MONTREAL AT CALGARY IN A REMATCH OF THE 2008 GREY CUP, THERE ARE A FEW THINGS RATTLING AROUND IN MY NOGGIN.

THE STAMPEDERS WENT 2-0 IN THE PRESEASON AND OUTSCORED THEIR OPPONENTS BY A COMBINED 78-13. THEY HURT THE BC LIONS’ FEELINGS IN THE PROCESS, RELENTLESSLY PRESSURING – AND INJURING – A ROOKIE QUARTERBACK IN THE LATTER STAGES OF A 41-6 BLOWOUT WIN.

TO ME THE STAMPS SENT A MESSAGE TO THE REST OF THE LEAGUE. SHOOT, BO LEVI DIDN’T EVEN PLAY FRIDAY AT EDMONTON BUT THEY STILL TURNED THE ELKS INTO ROADKILL, 37-7.

CALGARY IS USED TO WINNING, AND THEY MEAN BUSINESS. IT’S BEEN A WHOLE FOUR YEARS SINCE THEY’VE BEEN IN A GREY CUP AND THAT’S AN ETERNITY FOR THEM!

LOOK OUT MONTREAL ON THURSDAY NIGHT. THIS COULD GET UGLY.

AND YOU’VE HEARD THAT SAYING, “WHAT’S IN A NAME?” WELL I SAY, “WHAT’S IN A GAME?”

YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING INTERESTING IN ANY PARTICULAR MATCH-UP, NO MATTER WHO’S PLAYING; WHETHER IT BE PRESEASON, REGULAR SEASON OR PLAYOFFS.

FRIDAY’S OTTAWA AT WINNIPEG GAME MARKS THE RETURN OF PAUL LAPOLICE TO HIS ADOPTED HOMETOWN AND THE REDBLACKS DEBUT OF QUARTERBACK JEREMIAH MASOLI.

MEANWHILE SO CONFIDENT ARE THE TWO-TIME DEFENDING CHAMPION BLUE BOMBERS THAT THEY DIDN’T EVEN PLAY QUARTERBACK ZACH COLLAROS IN THE PRESEASON. MUST-SEE TV RIGHT THERE, AS TSN KICKS OFF ITS 25TH SEASON OF FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, FOR REAL.

EVERY RIDER GAME IS A BIG ONE, SO THERE’S NO NEED TO PREVIEW SATURDAY’S RIDERS-TICATS CLASH AT MOSAIC STADIUM HERE.

BUT I’M EXTREMELY INTRIGUED BY SATURDAY NIGHT’S MATCH-UP OF EDMONTON AT BC. THESE TWO TEAMS WILL BE BATTLING FOR THE FINAL PLAYOFF SPOT AND MAYBE A CROSSOVER. THEY’LL BE LOOKING TO GET OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT, BUT ONLY ONE TEAM CAN.

AND LET’S NOT FORGET DURON CARTER IS IN CAMP WITH THE EDMONTON ELKS BUT WE HAVEN’T HEARD A PEEP FROM THE ONCE BRASH, BAD BOY RECEIVER. I ASSUME HE’S THERE. LIKE, I HAVEN’T HEARD A THING ABOUT HIM.

AS I TOLD YOU, HE’S A DIFFERENT PERSON NOW AFTER A YEAR OUT OF THE LEAGUE AND JUST WANTS TO PLAY BALL.

HE – AND THE ELKS – ARE A HARD TEAM NOT TO ROOT FOR.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY
