TUESDAY COMMENTARY – WHERE’S THE HYPE

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

IT’S TUESDAY AND THAT MEANS IT’S TIME FOR THE GOOD, THE GREAT AND THE UGLY! THIS ONE’S EASY.

FIRST, THE GOOD: THE RAPTORS STAVED OFF ELIMINATION ONCE AGAIN MONDAY NIGHT. SPICY P HAD 23 POINTS AND 10 ASSISTS AS TORONTO BEAT THE 76ERS 103-88 IN PHILADELPHIA. PHILLY LEADS THE SERIES 3-2 WITH GAME 6 IN TORONTO ON THURSDAY.

WHY DOES THE NBA ALWAYS SPREAD THESE SERIES OUT SO LONG?

ANYWAY, THIS IS GOOD. ALTHOUGH THE MAJORITY OF CANADIANS SAID THEY WERE WATCHING THE BLUE JAYS MONDAY NIGHT WHICH BRINGS US TO …

THE GREAT: BO BICHETTE HIT HIS FIRST CAREER GRAND SLAM, POWERING THE BLUE JAYS TO A 6-2 VICTORY OVER THE BOSTON RED SOX.

THERE WERE ALMOST 21-THOUSAND AT ROGERS CENTRE WHICH TELLS YOU HOW MANY DIEHARD JAYS FANS THERE ARE WHO STILL PREFER BASEBALL OVER WATCHING THE RAPTORS IN THE PLAYOFFS!

TORONTO IS ALONE IN FIRST AT 11-6. IT’S ONLY APRIL BUT THEY’RE WINNING, WITH FLAIR, AND THIS IS FUN.

AND LASTLY, THE UGLY: IT’S NOT SO MUCH UGLY AS IT IS DISAPPOINTING.

MY ESTEVAN HOCKEY BUDDIES ARE WONDERING WHERE’S THE HYPE CONSIDERING THE BRUINS ARE IN THE LEAGUE FINAL AND HAVE A 2-0 SERIES LEAD ON FLIN FLON, YET THEY SAY NOBODY’S TALKING ABOUT IT?

SIMILARLY THE MOOSE JAW WARRIORS SPANKED SASKATOON IN TWO HOME PLAYOFF GAMES ON THE WEEKEND BUT I’M TOLD MOSAIC PLACE WASN’T NEARLY SOLDOUT.

I’M CHALKING IT UP TO THE POST-COVID AFFECT. I REALLY DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE IT IS BUT THESE AREN’T THE 80S AND 90S ANYMORE. FOR WHATEVER REASON, JUNIOR HOCKEY LACKS THE SIZZLE IT ONCE DID.

THE BIGGEST QUESTION FACING THE LEAGUES NOW IS: WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET IT BACK?

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY

Every year the league tries to make the game less physical. Any good hit results in a penalty. There’s one reason for you.

But why complain with a crowd of 3300 in Moose Jaw? Not a bad number. The league wants to mandate big rinks, which only makes for a less exciting atmosphere.
Compare a game with 3000 in PA to 3000 in Saskatoon.

I was at the Warriors game on sat night so I can’t speak for Friday night, although it wasn’t sold out there was a really good crowd at the game and there is quite a buzz in Moose Jaw with support for the warriors, lots of business with warriors posters up on the windows and lots of establishments busy before and after the game. I had a really fun time going for supper before and running into a lot of people going to the game and going out after the game, I would would argue that Moose Jaw is behind… Read more »

I feel to get Junior hockey back to the way it was for fans they have to allow fighting in the game again like it was in the 80’s and 90’s. That adds excitement to the game and you can protect your players who get pushed around. Hence with the Melville millionaires they lost their top 4 guys for just about 3 months at the end of the season and there was no retribution for it. Sad but true
