TUESDAY EYE-OPENER

The Calgary Flames now hold second place in the Pacific Division after beating San Jose 4-1. Lance Bouma scored the winner and added an assist for the Flames. The two teams each have 63 points, but the Flames have a game in hand over San Jose. The win was Calgary’s fourth in their last five games.

Devan Dubnyk was sensational again for Minnesota as they beat the Canucks 5-3. He made 22 saves for his eighth win since joining the team from Arizona in a trade. Jason Pominville and Ryan Suter scored power-play goals for the Wild.

Edmonton is back on the winning track with a 2-1 win against the New Jersey Devils. The Oilers had entered the game after losing their last two games. Nail Yakupov came back from a mid-ice collision and five stitches above his lip to score the winner on the power play.

Two goals from Marian Hossa wasn’t enough as the Phoenix Coyotes edged Chicago 3-2 in a shootout. Antoine Vermette scored the winner in the third round and also added another in regulation. Shane Doan added a power-play goal for the Coyotes.

The NBA has another coach with one-thousand wins. Gregg Popovich is only the ninth bench boss to accomplish the feat. He is also the third-fastest. His San Antonio Spurs rallied to beat Indiana 95-93. Tony Parker led the offence with 19 points. Tim Duncan dropped 15 and Marco Belinelli netting the winning basket with 2.1 seconds left.

A career-high 27 rebounds from DeAndre Jordan led the Blake Griffin-less L-A Clippers to a 115-98 win over the Dallas Mavericks. He went on to score 22 points. Griffin will miss the next three-to-four weeks with a staph infection in his elbow. The Clippers ended a four-game losing streak in the victory.
