It was a huge news day in the world of Canadian sports and we had some pretty big NHL topics to discuss as well on Tuesday’s Episode #924 of The RP Show – Daytime Sports Talk – on Game+ TV, YouTube Live and WQEE Radio! Here’s the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont kicked things off with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: BREAKING NEWS – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats sign Bo Levi Mitchell to a 3-year deal, thus ending any speculation he’ll sign elsewhere in free agency. The panel broke down what it means with viewers, 1) Johnny Hockey’s return to the Saddledome was “eventful”, 2) NHL Monday leftovers, 3) NFL owners will discuss the idea of playing Conference Championship games in neutral sites, i.e. Mini Super Bowls, 4) In the NBA the Hawks lost 111-100 at the Bulls, 5) Rick Tocchet makes his Vancouver Canucks debut Tuesday at home versus Chicago, and 6) Randoms including the CHL Top Prospects Game and what’s next for the Dallas Cowboys.
  • Rod opined that the Ticats/Mitchell signing was inevitable and predicted during Grey Cup Week that Rider fans were getting their hopes up far too much and were primed for a letdown. Today was that day.
  • Stanley Cup champion and Flames/Canucks Alum Tim Hunter joined the show from Calgary to reflect on Johnny Gaudreau’s return to the Saddledome and said none of the boo’ing was mean-spirited. He agreed with Rod that the best is yet to come for the Calgary Flames. Regarding the Vancouver Canucks, Hunter was disappointed at the treatment of fired head coach Bruce Boudreau and said while the team will get a bump from the Tocchet hiring they simply aren’t good enough to contend for a playoff spot.
  • In Hour 2 we were joined by ESPN Cincinnati Radio’s Mo Egger who did a victory lap for predicting a Bengals win at Buffalo in an AFC Divisional Playoff game on Sunday. Mo explained how the Bengals have become a force with Joe Burrow at quarterback and hopes to see them in the Super Bowl in Arizona. It was learned that NFL Playoff games outdrew NHL games in Canada on TV on the weekend and Egger discussed the explosion of the league’s popularity over the past few decades.
  • Next up was Bet Regal NHL Ambassador Bernie Nicholls who reflected on his six NHL suspensions including one in 1996 when he crosschecked Panthers defenceman Ed Jovanoski in the face! Bernie also discussed his family’s love/hate relationship with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and explained why Tampa Bay’s Jon Cooper plays his top two lines more than any other coach in the NHL.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Whose NHL Retro Reverse Jersey is better – Buffalo or Boston? At press time, the Sabres were leading.
  • Monday’s Rockstar of the Day was Jon Ryan. Tuesday’s was Bernie Nicholls!
  • If you missed the show you can catch the replay at 10 pm PT/12 am CT on Game+ TV, on our YouTube Channel or wherever you enjoy your podcasts.
  • See you at 12 pm ET on Wednesday on Game+, YouTube Live and WQEE.
