TUESDAY RUNDOWN: FLAMES GAME DAY & LOADS OF OLYMPICS, NLL AND MORE!

We covered the day’s hottest sports topics with Episode #697 of The RP Show – Daytime Sports Talk – on Tuesday live from Grey Eagle Resort & Casino in Calgary! Read on for the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont kicked it off with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) An Olympics update including Canada’s 7-2 win over China in mens hockey, 2) Monday’s NHL games, 3) The NFL Draft is all the talk since Super Bowl is over, 4) The Raptors got spanked in New Orleans, 5) The Coyotes’ ongoing arena grease fire, and 6) Tonight’s NHL slate includes Columbus at Calgary and Edmonton at LA.
  • Rod continues to be astounded by Canadians’ fascination with the Coyotes arena situation. Moose feels moving to a 5,000-seat arena for three seasons is a good thing, creating a demand for tickets. On the other hand Rod said it’s a disaster since the Coyotes have no plan for a new arena. He compared the situation to the Calgary Flames, where nobody minded the team playing in the 7,500-seat Calgary Corral while the Saddledome was being built next door in the early 1980s.
  • 11-year NHL veteran and 1989 Flames Stanley Cup champion Ric Nattress joined the show to discuss Monday’s acquisition of forward Tyler Toffoli. Nattress explained Toffoli had a history with Darryl Sutter and several good relationships with current Flames players. Nattress feels there hasn’t been this much excitement around the Flames since 2004. Regarding another of his former teams, the Montreal Canadiens, Nattress feels they’re on the right track by selling off assets and kickstarting the rebuild.
  • In Hour 2 for Great Western Original 16 beer we were joined at Grey Eagle by longtime sports executive Lee Genier. The former President of the Saskatchewan Rush, NLL Executive of the Year, President of the Saskatchewan Rattlers and V.P. of Sales & Marketing for the Calgary Stampeders discussed all the leagues and took several questions from viewers. He admitted that the NLL has looked at Winnipeg for expansion in the past, but opted for San Diego, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Fort Worth. Genier said the NLL plans to double in size to 30 teams by 2030. Lee also examined the current plight of the CFL and said there are lots of things the league can do to become a money-maker.
  • Sportsnet Flames host Ryan Leslie joined the show to preview the Blue Jackets/Flames match and recap Tyler Toffoli’s media session from Tuesday morning. Ryan said everyone’s excited to go to the rink in Calgary these days, and excited about the front-running Flames.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who’s the best team in the NHL’s Pacific Division – Vegas, Calgary, Edmonton or Anaheim? At press time, the Flames were leading by a large margin.
  • Monday’s Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions was Andrew Harris. Tuesday’s was Lee Genier.
