TUESDAY RUNDOWN: OILERS POST-MORTEM, MICKELSON & MORE CFL PREVIEW

It was a hot day in sports and we covered it ALL on Episode #773 of The RP Show – Daytime Sports & Entertainment Talk – on Tuesday on Game+ TV! Here’s the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont opened the show with the breaking news that Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson will play in the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour event in England this week. At the same time, Weyburn’s Graham DeLaet announced his retirement from the PGA and the guys discussed his legacy with viewers. THEN we got going with these Quick Six show topics: 1) The Avalanche sweep the Oilers. What’s next for Edmonton?, 2) Bruce Cassidy is fired as head coach of the Boston Bruins, 3) OHL & WHL Playoff and World Womens U18 talk, 4) The final four qualifiers are named for the RBC Canadian Open, 5) The Jays win an 8-0, weather-delayed game at Kansas City, and 6) Canada’s Mens Soccer team has resumed practicing despite their labour dispute.
  • Viewers were eager to discuss 3DownNation’s Week 1 CFL Power Rankings which have #1 Winnipeg, #2 Saskatchewan and #9 Edmonton. We pushed it to Hour 2 where we could spend more time on it!
  • Winnipeg Jets radio colour man Jamie Thomas joined the show for an update on the club. He hinted that Barry Trotz is at the top of the team’s wishlist as head coach but said there are several other quality candidates out there. While Trotzy prefers to take his time, J.T. feels the Jets would like to make an announcement soon. He also reported the future of Mark Sheifele is up in the air while Lady Byng winner Kyle Connor had a career year and his defensive play is “getting better”. Jamie covered all aspects of the Jets as we head into the summer.
  • In Hour 2 we were joined by Sportsnet Oilers host Gene Principe for a post-mortem on the Oilers. Geno figures all-in-all the Oilers should be happy with their season and their turnaround, although the feelings are still quite raw after being swept. Principe agreed with Rod that the Oiler players really liked head coach Dave Tippett and said firing Tipp mid-season was the toughest decision GM Ken Holland has ever made. The future for goalie Mike Smith, at this time, is still cloudy.
  • The Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Whose side are you on in the Saudi LIV Golf saga – Phil’s or Not Phil’s? At press time, over 60% of voters sided with Mickelson.
  • Monday’s Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions was Bernie Nicholls. Tuesday’s was Gene Principe.
