BOSTON (AP) — Charlie Coyle scored the tiebreaking goal late in the opening period and Boston’s tight defense carried the Bruins to their fifth straight victory, 4-1 over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night in a matchup of top NHL teams.

Jake DeBrusk and Jakub Lauko also scored as Boston improved to 10-1-3 in its last 14 games. Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins, who lead the Eastern Conference with 67 points.

COREY PERRY JOINS EDMONTON OILERS

EDMONTON – After Corey Perry was released by the Chicago Blackhawks in November, there were a number of NHL teams who were interested in the veteran forward.

A chance to play with Connor McDavid and the surging Edmonton Oilers proved too good for Perry to pass up.

The Oilers announced Monday that Perry signed a one-year, US$775,000 deal with the team, He could make more in performance bonuses.

“There were some other suitors out there that were great options, and I want to thank them,” Perry said after practising for the first time with the Oilers at Rogers Place.

“But it all kept coming back here. When you have a six-year-old kid and you have Connor McDavid on the team, you kind of follow the Edmonton Oilers.

“All jokes aside, this team is going in the right direction. Not just because they’ve won 13 games in a row, but you can see where they’re going and their mindset and the vision that they have. They want to win a Stanley Cup.”

Perry’s career was headed in the wrong direction after the gritty forward had his contract terminated by the Blackhawks on Nov. 29 after clearing waivers.

The Blackhawks said an internal investigation revealed that Perry “engaged in conduct that is unacceptable” and violated both Perry’s contract and the Blackhawks’ team policies ensuring a professional and safe work environment.

Perry didn’t comment Monday if he would challenge the Blackhawks’ termination of his deal, or provide any more details on what caused the Blackhawks to terminate his contract.

Since his release, he’s been consulting with mental-health counsellors and was on the ice five times a week, preparing to return to the NHL. He said the move to play again has the full support of his mental-health caregivers.

“If you need the help, go find it and treat yourself,” said Perry. “When I get up in the morning every day now, I can look myself in the mirror and be happy about myself and where I’m going. I’m proud of what I’ve done over the last two months.”

The tentative plan is for Perry to make his Oilers debut Saturday when Edmonton hosts Nashville. He will likely not play Tuesday against Columbus and Thursday against the Blackhawks, the team that waived him.

CFL

OTTAWA – Dominique Rhymes is officially back with the Ottawa Redblacks.

The CFL team announced Monday it had signed Rhymes to a two-year contract. Rhymes and the B.C. Lions mutually agreed to part ways last week.

Rhymes, a 30-year-old Miami native, began his CFL career with Ottawa (2017-19), registering 102 receptions for 1,578 yards and six touchdowns in 39 career regular-season games. He also helped the Redblacks reach the 2018 Grey Cup game.

MONTREAL — The Grey Cup-champion Montreal Alouettes re-signed running back Jeshrun Antwi, defensive lineman Avery Ellis and defensive back Najee Murray to one-year contract extensions Monday.

REGINA — Veteran kicker Brett Lauther and offensive lineman Logan Ferland signed contract extensions with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Monday.

Both players are Canadian. Lauther’s extension covers three years while Ferland signed for two years.

The six-foot-one, 195-pound Lauther enters his sixth season with Saskatchewan. The Truro, N.S., native has made 203-of 242 field-goal attempts (84 per cent) and 130-of-142 converts (91.5 per cent) while registering 14 special-teams tackles.

NFL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have agreed to hire Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their head coach, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Monday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been finalized.

Callahan replaces Mike Vrabel, who was fired on Jan. 9 after six seasons and losing 18 of his final 24 games.

The 39-year-old Callahan had a virtual interview with Tennessee on Jan. 12, the first of 10 candidates to speak to the team. The Titans interviewed Callahan in person on Monday and decided to hire him, the person said. The Titans declined to comment Monday night.

The NFL had not allowed in-person interviews of current league employees until Monday, the day after the divisional playoff round.

Callahan becomes the third coach hired since the season ended Jan. 7. New England promoted Jerod Mayo to replace Bill Belichick, and the Raiders elevated their interim coach, Antonio Pierce. Carolina, the Los Angeles Chargers, Atlanta, Seattle and Washington are still looking for coaches.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers promoted Dan Morgan to president of football operations and general manager on Monday, handing the task of turning around the struggling franchise to a former star linebacker with the team.

Morgan, who has spent the past three seasons as the Panthers’ assistant GM, will oversee the personnel operation, the team announced.

The Panthers are 31-68 since David Tepper bought the team in 2018, tied with the New York Jets for the worst record in the league. They have not been to the postseason since 2017 and have been criticized for poor trades and draft picks in recent years.

The Very Good: “If you need the help, go find it and treat yourself,” said Perry. In the world of a self created industry of victimhood this is as old skool as it gets and the right thing to do. Frankly this is a m.a.n. Corey Perry had a bad day at the office and paid the price. Rather than do a deep dive on every psychological issue he’s had since 5 he took some time off and got back to living his life and moving forward. To those out there that have gone through this. Move on and make… Read more »
