Facing elimination in Game 2 of the East Final, the Moose Jaw Miller Express pounded out seven runs in the first inning on the way to a 17-6 rout of the Saskatoon Berries Monday night at Ross Wells Park. The victory avoided a sweep for the Millers, and forced a deciding Game 3 of the Best-of-3 on Tuesday evening at Cairns Field in Saskatoon.

Meanwhile the West Final is going the limit as well. The Okotoks Dawgs scored a 4-3 home victory over the Sylvan Lake Gulls on Monday, forcing a Game 3 on Tuesday in Sylvan Lake.

MLB

Leo Jimenez hit a two-run home run, Vladimir Guerrero Junior had two of his team’s nine hits, Bowden Francis worked a career-best seven innings, and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays opened a three-game series in California on Monday night with a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Will Wagner, called up from triple-A Buffalo for the Jays, had three hits in his major-league debut. Both of the Angels runs were scored on home runs.

NHL

The Toronto Maple Leafs have called a press conference for Wednesday morning, at which time they’re expected to announce that Auston Matthews will take over as captain of the NHL club. Matthews will replace veteran John Tavares in the role. Matthews will be the Maple Leafs’ 26th captain in franchise history and it marks the first time the team has ever had an American captain.

NFL

The first full weekend of pre-season games featuring the NFL’s new dynamic kickoff featured two long returns, a significant drop in touchbacks, and mass confusion on an odd play that ended up as a rare safety. The NFL’s goals of increasing the rate of returns and bringing back the threat of big plays were mostly accomplished. The NFL said 81 per cent of kicks have been returned so far.

CFL

Veteran QB Trevor Harris returned to practice with the Roughriders on Monday and ran the first team offense. Harris has missed the past six games with a knee injury. Head Coach Corey Mace said there’s “a shot” Harris will play Friday when they host the Montreal Alouettes.

NY Yankees Manager Aaron Boone finally had the sack to toss the analytics aside and sit Gleyber Torress who as a baseball/analytics looks good on a spreadsheet, but is nothing more than a human herpe incaple of running bases properly. Messages in baseball especially playoff baseball need to be sent. I’m going to educate people on this WCBL. It’s a summer league for junior college guys who are looking… Read more »
