TUESDAY SPORTS PAGE: CALGARY COMEBACK!
CALGARY – Chest bumps, butt slaps and high fives enveloped Jake Maier after the Calgary Stampeders edged the Edmonton Elks 35-31 on Monday.
Calgary’s quarterback engineered a late come-from-behind win over their provincial CFL rival on Labour Day. The Stampeders (4-8) trailed by 15 points after three quarters.
In the fourth, Maier rushed for Calgary’s first touchdown of the game. He threw a pass to Reggie Begelton in the end zone that Calgary successfully challenged for pass interference, which led to a Tommy Stevens short-yardage touchdown.
Maier then marched the offence 84 yards downfield on 10 plays, with Dedrick Mills scoring the winning touchdown on a four-yard run with 20 seconds remaining.
After losing six games this season in the final three minutes, pulling out a late win to end a three-game losing streak – in front of 26,741 at McMahon Stadium – was a shot of confidence the Stampeders desperately needed.
Calgary’s Rene Paredes kicked field goals from 15, 24, 32 and 48 yards, while Cody Grace contributed a punt single.
Edmonton (2-10) dropped to 2-2 since Canadian quarterback Tre Ford took over as starter. Alberta’s CFL clubs meet again Saturday in Edmonton.
“That’s as tough a loss as I’ve been involved in,” said Elks coach and general manager Chris Jones. “We didn’t tackle really well in the fourth (quarter) and that really hurt us.”
HAMILTON – Chad Kelly threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Toronto Argonauts earned a 41-28 Labour Day victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on a hot, muggy Monday afternoon.
Kelly finished 15-of-23 passing for 201 yards and two interceptions in his first Labour Day start for Toronto (9-1). Kelly also ran three times for 27 yards and the TD.
It was also Kelly’s first contest after signing a three-year, $1.865-million extension Thursday that made him the CFL’s highest-paid player.
And he capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive with a two-yard TD run at 3:58 of the fourth that put Toronto ahead 31-13. By then, many of a sellout Tim Hortons Field gathering of 25,381 _ a Ticats home-game record _ had left.
Hamilton (4-7) countered with Taylor Powell’s four-yard touchdown pass, and then the two-point convert to Tim White at 9:42 that cut Toronto’s lead to 31-21.
But A.J. Ouellette’s 26-yard TD pass to Dejon Brissett at 11:29 gave Toronto a 38-21 advantage. Boris Bede’s 27-yard field goal at 13:14 was set up by Folarin Orimolade’s fumble recovery.

The Toronto Blue Jays scored three runs in the 10th inning and edged the Oakland Athletics 6-5 on Monday. Clutch hits by Santiago Espinal (ESS’-pih-nall), Cavan Biggio (BIHZH’-ee-oh) and Spencer Horwitz in the 10th generated the key runs. The Jays trail the Texas Rangers by half a game for the third A-L wild-card playoff berth. Lawrence Butler hit two homers for the A’s, who had their three-game home winning streak snapped.

U.S. OPEN
Two Canadian tennis stars are set to tangle on Tuesday in the U-S Open women’s doubles quarterfinals in New York. Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Quebec, and Chicago partner Taylor Townsend will play Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and her partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand. Dabrowski and Routliffe won their match Monday in a walkover against Barbora Strycova and Marketa Vondrousova, both of Czechia.
There are 3 American men in the U-S Open quarterfinals for the first time since 2005. Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton are the trio this time. All will be in action Tuesday. Fritz goes up against 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic for a spot in the semifinals, while Tiafoe and Shelton play each other. The U-S hasn’t had a male Grand Slam singles champion since Andy Roddick 20 years ago.
