SUPER BOWL

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Brock Purdy went overtime on Super Bowl opening night. The San Francisco 49ers’ second-year quarterback began by saying he’s ready to spoil Taylor Swift’s trip to Las Vegas and finished by remaining at the microphone to answer questions for several minutes after Monday’s media extravaganza concluded. Purdy gave thoughtful answers, posed for pictures and even signed an autograph while taking questions for about 65 minutes. He said “yes” when asked if he was willing to disappoint Swift, the pop superstar and the girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Purdy also said he couldn’t name the 16 quarterbacks picked ahead of him in the 2022 draft.

NFL

  • The Philadelphia Eagles will be the host team for the NFL’s first regular-season game in Brazil on Friday, September 6th — a day after the 2024 season opener. Commissioner Roger Goodell says the Eagles will play in Sao Paulo against a to-be-named opponent. It’ll be the first time in 54 years the NFL has played a game on Friday night on opening weekend. The game will be played at the Corinthians Arena, home to Brazilian soccer team S-C Corinthians.
  • Dan Quinn’s work as Washington Commanders coach is already underway. He and new general manager Adam Peters have hired Kliff Kingsbury as offensive co-ordinator and Joe Whitt Junior as defensive co-ordinator. The team announced the moves today. The fun part begins with tons of cap space to spend in free agency, the second pick in the NFL draft and, of course, the pursuit of a new quarterback.

NHL

  • Pierre Engvall’s goal with 2:02 left in the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the visiting New York Islanders to a 3-2 NHL victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Mathew Barzal and Kyle MacLean also scored for the Islanders, who halted a three-game skid. Mitch Marner and John Tavares scored for the Leafs, who had their three-game win streak ended.
  • Alexis Lafrenière scored at 1:53 of overtime as the New York Rangers rallied to beat the visiting Colorado Avalanche 2-1 in a battle of NHL divisional leaders. Artemi Panarin’s 31st goal of the season tied it 1-1 for the Metropolitan Division-leading Rangers, who have won two straight. Nathan MacKinnon scored his 32nd of the season for the Central Division-leading Avalanche, who had a three-game win streak halted.

NBA

  • Brandon Ingram scored 41 points and C-J McCollum added 20 as the New Orleans Pelicans flattened the visiting Toronto Raptors 138-100 in NBA action on Monday. The Raptors, coming off Sunday’s 135-127 double-overtime loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, got 22 points from rookie Gradey Dick and 17 from Scottie Barnes. The Pelicans have won three in a row, while the Raptors have dropped three straight and eight of their last nine.
  • Former Raptor Kawhi Leonard scored 36 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and the Los Angeles Clippers finished off a long NBA road trip in style with a 149-144 win over the Atlanta Hawks. James Harden had 30 points and Paul George scored 18 for LA. Trae Young, the Eastern Conference player of the week, had 25 points for the Hawks, who had won four in a row.
