The Regina Pats concluded the 2016-17 WHL regular season in record-breaking fashion Saturday night in Brandon. The club set a new single-season wins total with their 52nd victory, blanking the Wheat Kings 6-0 to sweep a weekend home-and-home series, and wrap up their 72-game schedule.

And Connor Hobbs’ 31st goal of the season at 14:14 of the second period for Regina set a new Pats record for goals by a defenceman, Hobbs’ record-breaking feat eclipsed the old mark of 30 established by John Miner during the 1984-85 season.

Regina led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by defenceman Jonathan Smart.

The Pats poured three more goals past Brandon goalie Logan Thompson in the middle frame – off the sticks of Austin Wagner, Hobbs and Dawson Leedahl for a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third period, Regina rounded out the scoring with goals by Adam Brooks and Filip Ahl.

Jordan Hollett posted the shutout in the Pats net with a 34 save outing, while Brooks led the way offensively with a goal and two assists.

Regina outshot the Wheat Kings 44-34 while going 0/1 on the powerplay and 7/7 killing penalties.

Brandon stars Reid Duke and Nolan Patrick did not play after suffering injuries Friday night in Regina.

The attendance was 5621.

The Pats wrapped up the regular season at 52-12-7-1 and now get set to take on the Calgary Hitmen in an Eastern Conference Quarterfinal beginning Friday in Regina in Game 1. The game will be broadcast on 620 CKRM and Access 7 with a 7:00 pm faceoff.
