WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY: CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

It’s always so much fun that we’re going to do it again – another edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: The Roughriders drafting defensive back Jaxon Ford in Round 2 of Tuesday night’s CFL Draft is more than just a really good P.R. move.

They also got an exceptional player with first round talent! If you didn’t know already, you do now, that Jaxon is the grandson of Roughriders Royalty, Alan Ford. Doesn’t this all automatically make Jaxon, Rider Royalty too?

Over the years the Riders have drafted local players who never came close to making the team, but was good for headlines. In this case, Jaxon could be a legitimate Rider star like Al and that’s going to be worth watching.

Next, the great: Tuesday was such a wonderful example of working together. With our most recent RP Show stint in Calgary, we promised Hotel Clique Calgary Airport one episode to be broadcast from their lobby on national TV. (The rest of the shows are from the adjacent Ace Casino).

They picked Tuesday, and I promised to deliver the greatest Calgary Flame ever – Lanny McDonald – for the show.

When The Moustache showed up, he quipped, “What? Jarome Iginla wasn’t available?”

They simply do not make them better than Lanny McDonald, and I could not be more grateful.

And to think I just met him a year ago!!

And lastly, the ugly
: I’d love to be a fly on the wall at those summer coaching symposiums which feature NHL coaches like Todd McLellan, Glen Gulutzan, Dave Tippett, Mike Babcock and the like.

A hot topic has to be how to handle today’s player, especially given the travails of Rick Bowness and Darryl Sutter. What’s the key to getting through to them?

I’d love to chat with John Paddock about it because the 68-year old has always shown the ability to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of the Pats during his time. He sure seems to have the knack.

Overall I’m just curious. Because I sure as heck don’t want to ever be a hockey coach.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV, WQEE and Streaming)

The above picture cap; Mosaic Regina stadium;

Why couldn’t the architects of this stadium build, configure a true round bowl seating arena? Mosaic Regina stadium is a miss mash of a pizza slice here a pizza slice there, Mosaic Regina stadium needs a major renovation already (while their at it, put a damn roof on it!) Mosaic Regina stadium is ugly fugly.

I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE SLICE ON THE NORTHEAST CORNER WAS FOR WIND… WHY IS IT SO WINDY HERE?… CUZ WINNIPEG SUCKS AND ALBERTA BLOWS.

BUT REALLY… THE CORNER SLICE PREVENTS THE WIND FROM BEING ABLE TO SWIRL AROUND THE STADIUM AND TURN INTO A BIG VORTEX

I’d suggest people read Nick Kypreos’ memoir. He speaks about his time playing for John Paddock in Hershey AHL. They played in a championship and Mr. Paddock was Mr. Paddock then and now. He’s spoken of as a Coach who genuinely cares about players and treats them all with respect. That was 1988 and in 2023 he’s developing Conor Bedard into a Pro. That’s they key term in all of this. Be a Pro. Pro’s don’t do this: Have a young player rate the work ethic of every player on the team then share that with the group. Mentally abuse… Read more »

I don’t know anymore. The Bruins changed from a hard nosed Cassidy to a much softer players coach in Montgomery…and lost. “Today’s NHL Player” needs to play hard for the millons they are getting. Shoudn’t matter who is coaching. Fed up with this Woke Generation. There, I feel better lol

Do you have any idea how many current NHL players support right wing politicians… it’s a lot. Calling them woke is hilarious. But it makes sense since people like you just use “woke” as a nonsensical buzzword for anything you don’t like

I sure hope a big Oilers fan never had money on the Bruins

There’s a bunch of Flames and Jets that need to look in the mirror instead of blaming their coaches.
