WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – MERRY GO ROUNDS

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 FM & Rock 98.5 FM)

WE JUST CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT THE EDMONTON ELKS.

EDMONTON’S PRO FOOTBALL TEAM FIRED THEIR PRESIDENT, GM AND HEAD COACH ON MONDAY FOLLOWING A 3-11 SEASON AND, AS WE TOLD YOU YESTERDAY, HAVE ENLISTED CFL ICON WALLY BUONO TO AID WITH THE GM SEARCH.

I FIND THIS ALL INCREDIBLY INTERESTING. FAR BE IT FOR ME TO TELL THE EDMONTON BOARD OF DIRECTORS HOW TO RUN THEIR FOOTBALL TEAM, BUT IT SEEMS THEY’VE GOT THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE.

IF YOU LOOK AT THE FLOW CHART OF ANY SPORTS TEAM, IT GOES PRESIDENT > GENERAL MANAGER > HEAD COACH.

SHOULDN’T THE ELKS BE HIRING THE PRESIDENT FIRST? SHOULDN’T THAT PRESIDENT THEN BE ALLOWED TO CONDUCT THE GM SEARCH THEMSELF?

I SUPPOSE THE ELKS WANT WALLY TO FIND THE BEST MAN FOR THE JOB, AND THEN GO FIND A PRESIDENT WHO’LL TAKE CARE OF THE BUSINESS END OF THINGS.

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! I KNOW IT’S WORKED OUT FOR TEAMS IN THE PAST BUT I STILL THINK IT STARTS AT THE TOP AND IF YOU LOOK AT THE REIGNING GREY CUP CHAMPS, FORMER BLUE BOMBER WADE MILLER IS IN CHARGE OF WINNIPEG AND HERE’S A GUY WHO KNOWS BOTH FOOTBALL AND BUSINESS.

AREN’T THERE ANYMORE OF THOSE GUYS AROUND? I KNOW I TALK ABOUT FORMER RIDER PRESIDENT JIM HOPSON ON HERE A LOT BUT HE FIT THAT MOLD AND HAS TWO GREY CUPS WITH SASKATCHEWAN TO PROVE IT.

MEANWHILE THE WEBSITE 3-DOWN-NATION.COM POSTED A LIST OF 12 CANDIDATES FOR THE EDMONTON JOB BUT NOT ONE OF THEM WAS NAMED BRENDAN TAMAN, ERIC TILLMAN NOR JIM BARKER.

CURIOUSLY, I’VE HEARD ALL THREE OF THOSE NAMES LINKED TO THE VACANT OTTAWA GENERAL MANAGER POSITION.

THE CFL SEASON HASN’T EVEN ENDED YET AND WE’RE ALREADY TALKING ABOUT A FUN MERRY GO ROUND WITH TWO TEAMS WHO DIDN’T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.

I SUPPOSE WE COULD TALK ABOUT THE ACTUAL GAMES THIS WEEKEND, BUT THIS IS A LOT MORE FUN.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY

Rod,

Why would anyone consider Eric Tillman given his history? Are you forgetting his time with the EE franchise? It was a disaster.

What history? Last I checked it was 2021 and I really hope you never have a bad day and then have to be reminded of it every time you want to move forward and contribute.

Tillman is not a fit in Edmonton. He should be in the CFL, but more so like what he had in Hamilton. Do a lot of the work, but be behind the scenes. Also – note Eric Tillman leaves and what do we know Hamilton looks to not have quite the talent as in the past.

When I listened to the Edmonton press conference about the firings they said they want a GM in place before the end of 2021 to get prepared for Free Agency and hope to have the president in place early in the New Year , but I agree with you Rod one would think the president first to hire his own guy .I’m not to happy with hiring Wally to conduct the GM search ,but obviously they can’t trust their BOD this time around .As a Diehard Edmonton fan (I refuse to use the new name ) I’d love Chris Jones… Read more »

I hope Edmonton is futile for the next 30 years. If anyone examines their 33 year run of excellence results are results, but they were playing with a different set of rule. If they screw this up with the world being all things equal it’s on them. Edmonton is a community owned team that does nothing for it’s community nor can I ever remember them having a CEO other than Hugh Campbell who was not known within the community. Neil Lumsden is 68 years old, see if he’s interested or maybe Warren Moon. Jim Hopson was the exact same as… Read more »

Nice attitude to have against another community owned team Dont you worry Edmonton will be back on top sooner than later ,Don’t be surprised if your riders lose to the stamps this weekend

Your comments ooze with jealousy but I guess when your team only has 4 cups in 100 years compared to the 14 by Edmonton I can see that jealousy shining through lol

Anyone who would consider Brendan Taman, Eric Tillman, Jim Barker would be out of their cotton picking minds. Duane Forde the best option for any CFL franchise looking for long term stability and success.

The Winnipeg Jets should do as the Edmonton Elks did, fire everyone and push the reset button on that whole organization. The Jets won’t be winning any Stanley Cup Championship for the foreseeable future, Its the bleak.
