WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY: NOW WHAT?

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

We’re going to do it again; a Wednesday edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly …

First the good: Things are truly getting good at the Centennial Cup in Portage, MB. Entering Wednesday’s play, there are a pair of unbeaten, 3-0 teams: the Brooks Bandits and Collingwood Blues.

One would think they’re on a collision course for Sunday’s final on TSN however the Battlefords North Stars would have something to say about that. The Stars improved to 2-1 with a 3-1 win over Steinbach Tuesday night. We’ll have coverage here daily.

Next, the great: You know, there really is such a thing as the good ol’ days. An interview on Tuesday’s RP Show with CFL great Adriano Belli proved just that.

Known as the “Kissing Bandit” through his playing career which spanned 2001-12 with Toronto, Montreal, BC and Hamilton – plus a few NFL stints – Belli was a guy who made you buy tickets or turn on the TV to watch.

Why the name “Kissing Bandit”? Because the Italian star was famous for running around the field and kissing unsuspecting victims. Opposing players, broadcasters, referees, fans … no one was off limits.

With two Grey Cups to his name, Adriano is probably Hall of Fame worthy.

But the way things are these days, he’d probably be brought up on charges and cancelled.

I guess that’s not great. But Adriano is.

And lastly, the ugly: Citizens of Tempe, Arizona voted down the 2.3-billion dollar entertainment district which would’ve been home to the Arizona Coyotes.

Since the vote we’ve had quotes from Gary Bettman, plus the Coyotes owner, but I haven’t bothered to read them. It’s all so much lip service.

All that matters now is where the Coyotes end up playing in the near and distant future and my gamble is that no one knows the answer to that question. And if they say they do, they’re lying.

And that’s ugly.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Gary Bettman has been looking at the larger picture for 20 years. He views that franchise as a southwest TV market that impacts their contracts. Besides the point he probably thinks well who doesn’t like hockey and those old geezers need something to do in the winter. Their own team a Saturday night game. Houston doesn’t have a rink. They tabled Quebec City when Seattle came in. That is similar to Winnipeg. Winnipeg was a spot for relocation. Canadian teams have no chance to win anything, but they underwrite the losses of American teams. Quebec Coyotes/Flint Tropics and it will… Read more »
